Yes, I am coming to this forum needing a slave cylinder for my 1985 2.3 4x4-new clutch installed last month slave seemed ok and since a new one was 115.00 I rolled the dice -oh well live and learn. So I am looking at Mitchell Manual and it lists a labor rate for EXTERNAL and internal slave R&R (.9 Vs. 5.5), Is there a trans out there that will bolt in and has EXTERNAL slave

Yes, but good luck finding a TK5 or TK4 that has a 4x4 tailhousing.

Do you have the time or tools to do the slave by yourself?

I have tools and lifts and helpers-but I hate working on cars (I am an ASE certifed service writer!) LOVE to watch OTHERS work on cars-heck I get paid pretty good to watch! I am so mad about this that I had the service manager get me a 2.5L to use the crank&rods and after I finish my answer here I am gettin' .040 over pistons and starting my engine build early(my original plan called for an engine in a few months but since a slave cylinder is 5.5 hrs and R&R engine is 8.0 why pay twice?)I will just get the engine put in when the slave is put in.Since truck is NOT DD it can sit! Thank you for reading my rant and thank you for the trans information-were these ranger transmissions? I have a virtual ARMY of salvage yard countermen that will look up parts but year make and model of the possible doner vehicles would help again thank you!

Hmm... Look up the bellhousing and external clutch setup out of an '83-'84 ranger, then look up a TK5 out of an '85-'87 4x4 ranger.

The TK5 may have been an external slave cylinder, but I don't remember it that way. I had a TK5 and TK4, so I just used the TK4 bellhousing on the TK5 and called it a day.

I also didn't have 4wd, and I'm REALLY not sure about the TK series transmissions being in 4wd.

I wish I could be more help...

DRAT and double DRAT!!:annoyed:

How about a Jeep T5?

Those were obviously 4x4 and you could (within reason) find a hydraulic bellhousing to fit your engine.

I just don't know about the gearing in those. I know that a V8 T5 (out of the thunderbirds and such) had different ratios that would kill a 4 cylinder starting off in 1st at low rpms (considering stock diff ratios and such...)

But since you're a 4wd guy... It might come out to help you.
