External Fuel Pump Location?

I did the back half of the fuel system quite a while ago and at the time I was not aware that external fuel pumps really don't like to suck fuel. The way I have this setup now concerns me and I'm considering re-doing it. The pump is about a 10" from the bottom of the cell. What's your opinion on the matter?

For that location of the fuel cell an intank pump would be better

Its not just external pumps that don't create suction, its electric pumps in general, the old mechanical pumps on the engine created enough suction to pull fuel up and over the top of the tank then relied on siphon and suction to keep the flow going

There are certain styles of electric pumps that create more suction, I think vane type was one, but this can't do high pressure
So if you are running EFI and need the high pressure then run 2 pumps, like Ford did, a Vane type to suck fuel up and out of the tank and send that to the high pressure pump
The flow is the same, just need the pressure at the fuel rail

Well I'm not fond of the idea of ditching the pump I have now and my cell is not setup for an intake pump. If for a fact this current setup will not work I will move the pre filter and pump right next to the cell outlet

I added to my post about using a vane type suction pump with current pump

But yes, problem would be gone if you could gravity feed current pump, either by lowering the pump or raising the fuel cell

With the parts I have now I could move the pump right above the sump and level with the floor of the cell. Just checking with others first if that will be necessary. Looking up kits though to move the pump inside the cell would be nice but I gotta draw the line somewhere with this build and I passed that line a long time ago.

I run the dual external pump system on my truck with a cell.. A smallish 5-7 psi pump feeding the high pressure pump. The low pressure pump is about the same height and distance as your pump you have now. Works fine. I'm using a stock 4.0l engine with a stock high pressure pump.

THESE pumps make a good first stage pump, they will suck fuel better than the normal gear style pumps.

I'm just going to redo the whole thing. Will cross that bridge again when I need to. I shouldn't have put the sump facing forward and should have mounted the pump right on the cage I built for the cell. I've also looked into using the Tanks inc PA series module to make it an internal pump cell. Just not real thrilled to toss more money at it when I already have parts that will work just not in the way I have them setup.
