Hey guys. I was doing some searching at the parts store ,and found the fl299 as an extended alternative too the fl1a. have any of you guys used it as an extended drain option. I run long on my oil changes ussually 10,000 miles, and wouldn't mind the extra filter capacity.

How about you change your oil more often?

Its super-easy to do, doesn't cost much, and is one of the most important parts of maintaining an engine.

Lol No it does not cost much. I work at a parts store the regular filter cost me 1.44 I have cases of oil I bought for next to nothing like 12 quarts of Mobil 1 racing for .5 cents a quart I bought six cases of the pennzoil synthetic for 1.25 a gallon its not really about cost for me. I always use synthetic the Mobil extended life recommends 10,000 mile intervals And I don't believe in 10g oil changes with the stock filter ,and the Mobil extended filter isn't any larger. My previous ranger made it to 218,000 before I totaled it. I went 10gs on all of its oil changes after 100,000 running the ep mobil1 and she pureed like a kitten until I hit that crown vic. Any way I am diesel mechanic, and all our fleet trucks run 25k oil changes and we have some million mile engines in the fleet mind you they run 40 quarts and two big ole filters. Btw the parts job Is my weekend gig. So I was wondering if any of you guys had any experience with the extended filters and did it affect anything.

Someone posted recently about using a longer filter with a cooler. They used a 90* adapter so the filter would hang down to give more room, and they mentioned a different filter that is longer.

I tried searching for it but couldn't find the exact post...but I think it was a Wix 1773 or something...Fram part number was PH977A for the same filter.

We are running 10G with our cars and trucks,we change the filters at 5.My race truck gets it syn.oil changed at about 150 laps(mater of fact, time to do that)

@ mark I believe those numbers cross to the fl299. there are actually 2 filters that will work in place of the fl1a one fiters to a higher micron ,but I can't remember the other number. I will poke around and look for the post you were talking about because I am not sure if it will fit without the adapter dropping it down

@4b yeah that's what I was doing before changing the filter at 5k

I can't really talk about my truck, 'cause it doesn't see many km so it gets a change whenever I get around to it...

But for my daily drivers, whatever they are(Dodge Caravan right now), I typically run synthetic oil and change it every 10 000 km, which is like 6400 miles or so? I always grew up on the idea you change your oil every 5000 km or less, so I figure I can stretch it to twice that on synthetic.

edit - if you insist on running for 10 000 miles between changes, I would suggest changing your filter at 5000miles regardless of wether or not you find a bigger one that fits.
