a good friend of mine acuired a 93 explorer 2x4 from a friend of his dad
heres the catch
its a 4 speed overdrive(mazda?) trans
and it is stuck in 3rd
it is in our autotech class garadge
and we have a school car(another explorer with a 4speed)
but it is a 4x4
he wants to know
1. will the other tranny work(both trucks are 93s)
2. can he convert his to a 4x4 with the truck we have for parts
3. and is it easer to fix the existing trans or replace it

im the only one in the class that is really interisted in RBVs
and the only one that even has heard of this site

plus hes a chevy boy
67 camaro daily driver
and this explorer will be a trail rig

If you have a 4x4 explorer with a working trans and T-case all you need to "convert" the 2wd with the dead transmission to a 4x4 is a socket set and strong arms.

The front axle will bolt right to the exsisting mounts on the 2wd Explorer.
You don't even need to disconnect the brake calipers
Remove them from the steering knuckle and hang them from the frame
with a bungee cord.

On ONE 2wd Explorer I've seen it used a 2wd Bronco2 style pivot bracket
(mounted INSIDE the underside of the engine crossmember) for the
Passenger side suspension beam and that required swapping in the
4x4 type bracket which mounts to the rear flange of the engine crossmember.

Both styles of bracket are riveted to the rear flange of the engine crossmember
and use the same mounting holes, so all you need to do is replace the 1/2" rivets with 1/2" fine thread bolts (stronger than the rivets anyway)

But swap in the 4x4 front axle, transmission T-case and driveshafts and you are golden...

Though if the "donor" is an electric shift T-case you'll have some
"fun" (in quotes because it's anything but fun) running the wires....
