Explorer motor cam how radical can I go?

What is the biggest cam I can go with with out running into issues with the computer?I have a 96 ranger 2wd I am putting a 5.0 96 explorer engine in with a c-4 tranny. I have the computer from the explorer and also can the explorer computer be programmed if I go bigger on the cam?Will changing rocker arm ratio mess with the programming also?

A stock mustang HO cam with 1.7 rockers works good in those engines. Be sure to get valve springs to match. No matter what cam or rocker arm ratio you change to the computer will need to be tuned to get the best performance out of your engine.

The explorer ECU will give you problems with the trans, it will look for the 4R70W (electronic overdrive C4), but all is not lost, you can get a programmer to delete that, as well as tune for any cam you want...Stick with the explorer ECU and get a tuner like SCT and you will be set

The big problem with the Explorer computer and cams is the lSA (lobe separation angle). Explorer likes anything 114 degs and above. Guys with the 94-95 Mustangs have the same problem. Not sure how easy it is to program around that. The transmission is an easy fix.

AOD is based off of the FMX. The C4 when to the C5 and then was a dead end.

So if i buy the E303 cam then I can have it programmed to the explorer computer and after I delete the transmission I can leave the trans harness unplugged.

With a stock program the Exp ECU has very little tolerance for mods, but once re-programmed with a tuner/programmer, you can make em work with almost any combination...
