the actual arch in the spring is different, the on has a bit more than 4in arch and the other 6in arch. and the actual pack thickness is different so thats the difference really. but instead of buyin new ones you can get them from a junkyard.

Yea, and put up with crappy used springs that squeak squeak squeak that you got to lube up all the time and then won't last as long as new ones will...not for me. I am buying new leafs when I can this summer. JC Whitney has them for Explorers and Rangers with shipping for well under $400 and you got a guarantee...not from a junk yard...I would never buy used suspension parts from a junk yard...now a motor if it was low mileages and they gave a great waranity on it...yes.

Used ones are not that bad - I got a set of Explorer springs for free at my favorite junkyard, and a bushing kit for like $35. Nothing wrong with them and they don't make any noise at all. I'd use just about anything from a junkyard as long as the price is right and it's not obviously worn out.

I checked JC Whitney, but I didn't see any Explorer springs. Did you find them there?

The junk yard is good for used ex leaf springs. And the answer for the op depends on how much lift you're lookin for. IIRC Ex leaves will give you 2" right off the bat. So just add that to what any lift ex springs aftermarket advertise.

Hmmmm, I could swear I did a search on them and the Ranger ones last month and I saw them. I will call them them next week. I am ordering new ones for my 99 Ranger. I can't beat the deal with shipping for the pair. Plus they come with the bushings installed as well.
Several of my friends have done the Explorer swap and they were not happy with the leafs for a dd. They just put back on their old leafs and bought the add-a-leaf for $49.00 and now enjoy the better ride. They told me the Exploder leafs were just to bouncy for them (unless they had a load in the bed). But..everyone is different...that's what makes the World go around....lol

I can't use my current stock springs, so I figure if I'm going to buy new ones, I will just get the explorer ones. I don't think adding a leaf here will help me :)
