I'm wondering if anyone has had 3 kids with car seats in the back of a 95-01 RBV Explorer or Mountaineer? We have a 6 year old in a booster seat, a toddler in her seat, and now kid 3 will be here in May/June. We have an Escape which we absolutely love (currently getting 21-27mpg), but it sure doesn't look like it's going to allow one more car seat. We had a 98 Mountaineer before the 2nd child came, so we didn't have another seat to check it out.......but it sure seemed a lot roomier than this Escape.

Any input for me?

sounds like it's time for a stretch.....

You can def do it if you have a 3rd row.

I can't remember if that was ever available on the 2nd gen Explorers.

It will NOT work in a two door explorer. Four door maybe.

y'know,i just got to thinking about it.....stretching an explorer wouldn't even be that hard to do.

they have a nice even section of frame under the passenger compartment....it tapers out toward the rear a bit,but nothing a little pushing with a porta-power couldn't take care of.

you'd need to start off with two of them, cut the front one in the middle of the rear door, cut the rear one in the middle of the front door, and weld 'em together.

for the middle door you use the back half of a front door and the front half of a back door, sort of the opposite of what i did with the shorty.the floor and roof are fairly flat,so i don't see any big issues there.a two piece rear driveshaft and all the usual stuff to hook up,bada-bing;mini limo!

No third row until 2002. I don't want IRS or a 5R55E transmission, but I will get one if I have to. They are a PITA to work on.

I would be getting a 4 door. Forgot to mention that, thanks!

I've seen them cut down with a shortened Ranger bed behind the rear seats, but never stretched. I would LOVE to have one like you describe. I much prefer the RBV Explorer over the 2002-2010 Ex.

well there ya go....get a sawzall and a welder, you only need one running rig,the other can be smashed to hell in the front.

them explorers are cheap,too.

I have 5 year old twins and a newborn. We've got no problem fitting all three of the minions in our 97 Exploder. :D

This is fantastic news. Thank you! I really want another Mountaineer, and so does my wife.
