Explorer AWD?'s

the trans in them is potentially the best small block trans ford ever built. it is stronger then a c6 when building to those ends.

in stock form they did have some issues, but at high miles generally. place a c4 and c6 would die much sooner in the identical environment. there is much more stress in an awd environment.

be controls is solid for them when general use is the goal like yours.

i have had nothing but good experience with that company.

Thanks wildbill, that is good advice.

Doing more reading of the general information on these. Read that Ford automatic transmissions were not that great. Are the automatics that Ford put into the 5.0 explorers are they bad or good? What is the best transmission fluid to use in them?

This viscous coupler, what is involved in replacing that part?

I have only owned Ford Rangers with the 5spd. Don't know much about the automatics.

Thanks for the help so far.

If I recall the viscous coupler is part of the transfer case so it would basically mean a tear down of the transfer case, and while you are at it may as well replace the seals, and of course the fluid, check the chain for excessive wear and slack.

Here's a great link to an awesome explanation of how that viscous coupler works. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225515

That link also includes photos of the internals of the transfer case and the viscous coupling.

Another possible T-case to use would be the Full size Bronco variant of the 13-56T-case, this version uses a bolt on flange for the rear output rather than a slip yoke like the F150 version of the T-case...

I recently bought a V8 AWD Explorer but have no plans on using anything other than the AWD T-case.

And I've only had one chance to drive it in the snow...

I need more data...

What I really need more data on is converting the vehicle to a 5sp

Not that there is anything wrong with the automatic besides the fact that I just don't like autos...
