I am going to be swapping in an Explorer 8.8 into my BII. Currently it has drum brakes, but I am going this weekend to get all the disc parts.

My questions are as follows:

1. Will I need to change the master cylinder if I stay with drum brakes?

2. Will I need to change the master cylinder if I swap to the disc brakes?

3. If I swap to disc brakes, is there any change in the routing of the hard brake lines on the axle?

I asked the ABS question back when I first got my 8.8, I got this:

1)IF YOU HAVE ABS IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT MASTER CYLINDER IT HAS

2)SINCE YOUR 85 HAS NO ABS YOU MUST PLAY AROUND WITH THE SYSTEM TO TUNE IT IN(new master, proportioning valve, etc.)

So I am planning on getting an adjustable proportioning valve to adjust the pressure until it works.

I don't know how the BII is routed originally but for my Ranger's brakeline routing I am planning on getting another passenger side softline to replace the driverside softline, then put my Ranger T junction on top the differential (as it is on my 7.5) and run new hardlines to each caliper softline.

Here are some sketches I whipped up for ya

Factory 1996 Explorer 4dr brake line routing:

My hybrid Ranger/Explorer routing. My Ranger is the same from the factory as this minus the softlines on each caliper, it has solid steel to each drum originally.

thanks for that sketch. I will get an adjustable proportioning valve.

that is the best way to do it, and is how i have been running for a year now.
