I know the Explorer 4x4's came with 8.8" 31-spline axles, but did the 2wd come with the 31-spline as well? I'm building an 88 Ranger drag truck and can't use the 4x4 Ex rear since its offset from center.
I found a guy with a 9" rear axle, complete for $100, but it's wider. Maybe I should just use it?:3gears:

the 2wd explorer and 4wd explorer share the same rear end, so they both are going to be offset

What's wrong with being off-set, your rear suspension or something?
Dave

In drag racing, its important that everything lines up. The offset is over 2", so the driveshaft won't be in line with the transmission. I'm afraid it will throw the suspension geometry off, and put added stress on the driveshaft and u-joints.

I think I'll just get the 9" rear. The price is right, it's strong, I don't have to put a c-clip eliminator kit in it, and I can change gears easier. I'll just run different wheels with more offset.

someone correct me if I am wrong since I am not an expert on explorers, but shouldn't the pinion be centered on the axle thus the offset in the diff and the different length axles?

All the old hot Fords from 60's & 70's(Fairlanes and Mustangs with the 427 & 428) ran with the offset axle with no problem. I would sure think that the 9" you talk about is off-set also.

I did not know about that. I guess I'll have to research that information. I always thought you wanted the drivetrain in a straight line when running high horsepower.
