Just out of curiosity, does the d35 out of an explorer bolt directly into a Ranger 4x4? say one with the d28?

Yep, but you'll need to shorten the front driveshaft about 1.5" or use the shaft and case from the Explorer.

There is info in the Tech Library on this swap.

Very simple, very easy.

Thats good. Alright here's a better question: would it be in my best interest to buy a 4x4 explorer to convert my 2wd to 4x4? the 4.0 in the sploder is TOAST so it would be VERY cheap... like 250 bucks...
so, is it fairly easy to install the 4.0's tranny and t case into the ranger, and it should bolt right in as far as bh bolts and such what? I realize there will be some/lots of custom fabbing on the t-case... its electric shift though... (YUCK)

You have to have a D28 from the factory to make it a easy swap. Starting with a 2wd Ranger makes it very complex to get a TTB axle under your truck.

Oh sorry, I forget to mention i have the option of an 84 jeep wagoneer, 4wd with coil sprung front solid axle, and leaf sprung rear, so I would go that route before trying to ttb swap my ranger, solid axle is just better...(however they are jeep parts, Ill probably have to replace them in a week or so)

NOTE: You WILL need the steering linkage along with the D35, because the d35 is WIDER than the D28.
