So i just bought an explorer about a month ago. I put some 31s on it and have been wheeling on it kind of hard up in the snow. Christmas Eve night i was up in the snow and was rocking it reverse to drive and it just lost all forward gears. It still has reverse and park. I figured it would be a simple fix but every transmission shop i talk to says they have to pull it and they say that the A4LD wont handle abuse put out by off roading. So any suggestions? I am thinking of a 5 spd swap but i cant find one. Im located in Vancouver, Wa.

Yeah the A4LD are known for being crap. You'd want to to for a Mazda 5 speed. You could be alright for a while with a new tranny, but I'd just swap in a manual and not have to worry about it. More fun that way too.

so will a 5 spd from a 2.9 bolt up the same as a 4.0? i read about doing the 4.0 clutch also so im thinkin of just trying the 2.9 tranny. maybe if im lucky it will be mazda tranny. the truck is a later 80s 4x4 ranger

if the donor 5 speed has a tranny pan don't use it its too weak

what do you mean the tranny pan is too weak? is it like an automatic or something with a pan on the bottom or is it something completely different?
