Exhaust System

I just changed the transmission and I can not get the pipes to stop leaking at the exhaust manifold by the flange. I used a tap on the threads and new bolts. What am I missing? Do I have to loosen and everything and try again.
There has to be a trick.

What engine? It probably needs new donuts or some sort of gasket since the old one is smashed down and you loosen'd it up...

Also you tighten them up evenly. If you pull one side up first it will leak.
