Ranger #2. 2.9. I just pulled the motor out and was checking out the exhaust. The cats have been hollowed out by the previous owner(s). For now, I have a brand-x cherrybomb on there just to muffle the sound a bit. Then I got to thinking.. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO BACK PRESSURE! They're both completely straight through.

Can this hurt my gas mileage/be the cause that I'm getting really REALLY bad mileage at all?? Would the change to a turbo muffler or a flowmaster or something with baffles help my mileage at all??

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Rob

zero backpressure on a 4-stroke is a good thing. unfortunatly, you dont have zero backpressure.

describe your exhaust for me please. stock manifolds? then into the turbo muffler...what size pipe? then whats after the muffler? nothing?

the 5" lift and 32's might have something to do with your bad mileage. what gears are you running with those?

I don't like cats & 0-2 sensors, but I just found out first hand that without them your gas mileage is going to drop about 5 mpg---also you need to be turning about 2,200 to 2,500 rpm at 60 mph to get decent gas mileage (having oversize tires takes more gas to turn em)

people often resent what they dont understand :icon_thumby:

i mean no offense of coarse. but how could you dislike something that can only cause good for you and the environment.

fuel injected vehicles make more power with less fuel (better mileage), and less waste (better for the environment) than carbed vehicles.

YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! (snakes eat rats---but I still don't like em)

You win--I bolted that nice shiny new CAT under my Ranger and it quit chugging & runs smooth now--spark plugs no longer sooty--atmosphere no longer sooty--it's rough moving into the new mellinium :bawling:

Yeah, these brand new technologies are 25 years in application and 40 years in discovery.

i wasnt suggesting O2 sensors and cats were "new" technologies. i just mean when new things come out, its fun to learn about them.

lol why on earth would you run without o2 sensors? you'd be stuck in open loop all the time, making crap for power and getting crap for gas mileage.

Hmmmmmmm......now I finally know what happened to my brain---always in open loop!
Re-learn something new every day.....

i have no 02 feedback and im making great power :icon_thumby: and good gas mileage

Oh and cats dont do anything for gas milage and as far as emmissions goes if your motor is well tuned and running right it will pass with flying colors without one.

I had an O2 sensor wire get wrapped around my driveshaft and rip it out. I ran without one for quite a while because I was broke, and got more broke because of the mileage. after I replaced It my mileage jumped back to about 23. I kept tweaking my exhaust and realized how much it affects mileage. But I still dont have a catalytic. Too expensive for right now.
