on a 93 ranger 2.3, did it have a cast manifold, or header from the factory? I just picked up an engine locally, and it has a header on it, but it looks like it might be factory? mostly because the primaries arent equal length, and it has provisions for the egr, which i wouldnt expect an aftermarket header to have, especially since it doesn't even look that nice.

im just curious, im turboing it so im not using it either way, i can take a picture if you want...

Some of them (I don't remember exact years) have stock header style manifolds... Someone else can chime in and give you exact years...

mmk, it must be one of them then. cuz it even has a heat shield with the nipple thing to go to the intake pre-heater.

I went to a junk yard and found that almost all 95's and up had headers. Just ask for a 98-2000 year "exhaust manifold" (this will save you money).

93-94 had a tubular header with both egr and 02 sensor on it.95up to 97 had the same but without the 02 sensor,it was located to the downpipe.98-2000 2.5,s had a cast iron manifold and a 95+ header is a nice addition to these motors, about 20 lbs off the front and flows a little better.

The cast Header on the 98-00's is just as good as the tubular header.

The cast header actually has a better more equal length design, and is only a few pounds heavier than the tubular one.

If i had a NA 2.3 or 2.5, Id take the cast header over the tubular one, and do a little porting to it.

yeah im not using it, just have it laying around and wasn't quite sure what it was

The cast iron header from a 98 2.5 weighs apprx.20 lbs more than a 95 tube header.Quite a bit of weight of the front on a 4 cyl.The tubular header will get flow better than the cast iron not only due to design but also because of the smoothness of the pipe.I will agree with your stament that with porting, especially extrued honing, the cast iron will flow better than a stock tube header but the cost is about $90 a manifold. The reason Ford went back to the old design of cast iron was a cost factor, you can form a cast iron manifold cheaper than you can a build a tubular manifold. Heres a couple of good reads http://www.wku.edu/~nathan.plemons/htmls/exhaust.html http://www.modified.com/tech/9912scc_intake_exhaust_systems/index.html
