I looked under my hood one day and was surprised to see stock headers! What year did they first get them?

1993 I believe was the first year of the tubular manifold. But the 93 I'm thinking of only had one header. :thefinger: :D

yeah, the late 2.3 had a nice tubular manifold which amounted to a shorty header... for someone with an early 2.3 or 2.0, the late exhaust manifold is, in effect, a cheap header and a good performance bump... i want one...

Maybe it was 95-96? That's when they jumped 14 HP (some sources say 12). Or maybe the 4 port intake probably helped more? 14 doesn't sound like much but from 95 to 96 when the Taurus was completely redesigned, the Vulcan only gained 5hp. Guess all the effort went into the new Duratec 3.0, lol.

probably a combo of both... that header is said to produce a significant gain on an older truck which didn't originally have it, though...

i think it was 96-97 engines that had it...

93-94 had the tube header with both O2 sensor bung and EGR bung.95-97 tube header had just EGR bung as they move the O2 sensor down the pipe before the Cat.On the dyno, they have no different flow numbers than a cast iron one(pretty sure one of the head guys on here did a flow test awhile back between the two) but are about 20 lbs lighter on the front end and if you modify it by cutting off the flange and go with a slip on pipe, you can pick up several hp and torque go up.

My 87 2.3

loves the shorty header best bang for buck I've made! $33.00 with shipping EBAY!:yahoo:

So the '93 (which I had) and newer 2.3 "header" fits an older 2.0 (which I have) and is a decent upgrade? I would think the yards would be full of these if you could get them off...

What usually happens is that the bolts in the header are rusted off and "welded "themselves in the threads or the flange is worned half off.

I got mine from a 93 Mazda...most of the bolts on the Mazda snapped off pretty easily...so I went to Ford and bought some new bolts...the ones on my 2.0 came off with ease and when I pulled the old header out I needed two hands and a back brace...putting the shorty header on I could hold it in place with one hand a beer in the other and still pull the ciggy from my mouth while lining up the new bolts...

Big weight difference...

I remember when I experienced this same shock. "They don't make them like they used to".
