exhaust donut how to.

My exhaust donut on my 08 2.3 was shot so I thought I'd do a quick write up.
This should be very similar for almost all rangers and other fords.

Raise vehicle and support with jack stands.


Here's my rusty bolts with weird rusty cone shaped nuts. My vice grips wouldn't clamp on them and my grinder was stolen so I used another method.



Here's the nuts



I used the craftsman wrenches that grip on "any" nut. My stripped nut tools weren't deep enough. I used a clamp to hold them tight to the cone shape and worked the other side with a ratchet. Mine was 15mm and I used a 7/16 and 9 16 wrench.

New bolts springs and nuts




Finger tighten as much as possible while wiggling the flange to ensure a good seat. Then tighten both sides until the flange on the bolt seats against the flange on the exhaust pipe.







Finished product


Now it's back to being quiet

What? You mean Ford went back to using exhaust donuts that have to be replaced every so often? What was wrong with the ball flanges that never wear out and don't have to be replaced?

Ball flanges leak eventually as well. And those you can't fix unless you cut it out.

I've never seen nor heard of (outside of damage from a wreck) a leaky ball flange.
