EX auto tranny to manual swap

I have someone on here who has a 1991 ranger which hes gonna check into parts for me. Would that manual ecu from that 4.0 work for my 94 ex? Also, do i have to replace the entire clutch pedal bracket or can i use the auto brake bracket and just replace the pedals?

Found a manual ECU. Now I need to know about the manual trans wiring harness,....any year m5od will work with my 94 ex or not????? The tranny i might be buying is a 96 m5od.

The 96 M5od will work fine, so long as its from a 4.0l.
The '96 harness may not. The trans side will be the same, but the engine side connector may be different. I cant remember the years that they changed the connector.

Ok, I have leads on a couple different wiring harnesses from several yards across the country, gonna ask around....nobody on explorerforum seems to want to help me.

Turns out the 1994 explorer was a class in itself.....the tranny wiring harness I need is a 1994 only. Sooo that's gonna be tough to find

You have the auto harness already. It has the correct connector on it.
Take any m5od harness you can find and splice it into the correct (the one you already have) connector.

The wiring going to the m5 will be the same on the older ones, its just the connector thats different. The only difference you will find is some m5 transmissions will have just the reverse switch and some will have the reverse switch and neutral switch.


Your making a mountain out of a mole hill Tammy. My 94 limited still has the auto harness in it. I just spliced the neutral safety wires into the neutral switch (It will ONLY crank in neutral this way. Planned it that way for remote start.) and the reverse light plug spliced in. It took all of 10 minutes to modify the harness, and that was taking the time to solder and heat shrink the wires.

Oohhhhhh ok gotcha! I havent been able to find any manual harnesses grr. i have a deal to buy almost all the parts i need. Includes a tranny. Only need to buy a few things on my own.

If they weren't currently in use, I would let you buy up all the parts you would need. My 94 Ex XLT is a factory 5 speed. Sounds like you are getting this all under control anyways lol! Keep pushing and you'll get it

OK everyone! I found a 5 speed near my house, but its out of a 5 speed F150, will it fit or not?

Not unless you're doing a 5.0l swap at the same time.

Yeah, I've heard these cylinders are a pain in the butt to bleed too. What is bench bleeding?

Bench bleeding is temporarily mounting the master cylinder by its flange in a vise, attaching a short length of tubing from the MC outlet, bent back to the reservoir. Add brakefluid, push the actuator rod a couple times and watch the fluid discharge from the tubing back into the reservoir. Replenish fluid as needed. You'll see the fluid kind of spit from the end of the tubing, and the first couple strokes will have some obvious air in the fluid. When you see 'solid' fluid, the MC is bench bled, and the tubing can be replaced by a plug to keep the fluid in the cylinder while it's being installed. The only thing left is to KEEP THE MC UPRIGHT WHILE IT'S BEING INSTALLED!!! Otherwise the fluid in the reservoir WILL spill, and you'll be pissed. I know I was!!
The whole process takes about 3 minutes and can happen directly before installation. One MC r/r I did, I 'benchbled' it after it was attached to the firewall, but before I attached the the brake tubing.

It's sad, I am too lazy and enjoy the simplicity of just throwing the truck in drive with an auto. I've never driven a manual besides my buddies lancer. I did ok for first time. Then his father tried to get him out of a snow bank and destroyed his clutch... It's sad that I did better my first time ever driving a manual...
