bought 94 ranger 4.0 4x4 dana rear end. manual trans burnt up after 4 months of owning. had to replace . any way to stop from happening. only 112000, also need to replace ball joints, is this a job for the garage? i have access to most tools . any special advice? i loved this truck since i first drove it.

maintain the fluid level at the proper level with the proper fluid (ATF dex III or better).

the transmissions used in these trucks is a very robust and reliable unit...failure isnt common. there isnt much room for improvement.

The rear isn't a Dana, it's a ford 8.8. The front is a Dana 35.

Ball joints are definitely something you can do yourself. Some may disagree, but all you should need other than normal hand tools, are a BFH, a c-clamp and a socket large enough to fit around the lower ball joint. And a hub socket of course.
