Back when i had my 2.9, I installed dual batteries and some other things, making it impossible to put a charcoal canister under the hood. So I removed the evap system and vented the system to atmosphere (I know it was illegal, spare me). I just recently swapped in a 4.0 and I would like to reinstall the system. The problem is I still don't have room under the hood unless I lay the canister on it's side. Will this adversely affect the performance of the system?

I've done some research online and nothing points to orientation of the canister or anything... I've seen them in a similar orientation that I want to go with but the canisters are bigger, even though the fuel system capacity is roughly the same (or smaller) than a ranger's 17 gallon capacity. This is an early system I'm hooking up which only has a purge solenoid and no flow sensors or anything.

I have an '88 BII 2.9 w/ canister system in normal position.4.0 isn't that much wider is it? is there room back of p/s pump for the canister? it could be zip tied in there or maybe tied to the master cylinder if room. can you vent return line to tank into the intake? just my thoughts,,good luck,,Larry

why can't you just relocate the canister and run some new hoses.

i don't think laying the canister on the side will hurt it though, and the system doesn't monitor it anyway

IF I didn't have a second battery that was occupying the space where the canister was I could have left it in the stock location.

I was planning on relocating it but the location I want to put it leaves it laying down, didn't think it was a huge issue, I'll have to try it out.
