Hello all,
The lady two houses down from me has a 1987 ranger 4x4 2.9l
I talked to her and she is willing to sell, told me to do some research on the value. So here I am. Kbb goes down to 92, nada doesn't give you many options as far a conditions. It doesn't run, last registered in 2011, rolled over the odometer (+200000). It needs tires, but has a lift installed. It had pack rats in it. I wanted this thing for years now. And interior isn't horrible but not great either. Here in AZ, we don't need to worry much about rust, so that won't be an issue. She doesn't know what's wrong with it. So in the interest of not screwing her over on price, does anyone have an idea of what I should offer? Thank you for any info/advise.

IDK, scrap value plus a hundred bucks just because..?

500 bucks tops, assuming the engine isn't stuck and the title is good. Scrap in this area is about 100 bucks per ton.

You'd be looking at 1200-1500 running and driving. Not only do you have to fix the original problem, but additional problems that were created from sitting for 5 years.

Try to find out the backstory on why it was parked. It's usually for a good reason.

Pics would be helpful and a better idea of condition would too. Hard to help if we don't know specifics. Check CL and see what others are going for in your area. Around here they range from 400.00 to 2000.00. based on condition and mileage. Shitty condition, low price. Plus what you'll have to do to get her up and running. Common sense says low offer is the best bet, she can always counter.

I'll say that up here a rust free body is worth a lot more than down there. I sold a rust free 85 b2 for $500 because I was hard up for cash. Down there I don't think rust free is a selling/buying point, hence my original estimate.

Awesome, thanks for the good solid advise everyone. I'll come at her with $500 and if she doesn't take it, I will not put more then 800 into the purchase of it. She kept saying she would love see someone get it running And wheeling again. I'll keep you posted and thank you all again for the solid advise

250 tops... it need tires! those are a few hundreds alone and who knows what else it needs.. just to run...

Are you mechanically inclined? This is the first answer you need to ask yourself. Taking a non running anything into a shop and saying... whats wrong with it will cost you plenty....

Myself i wouldn't pay over 400.00 where i live for anything that isn't running and not currently insured. unless it is a true parts truck and i can make some cash stripping the parts. 2.9 engines were / are a problem to start with and with 200k i bet it will need head gaskets... just my $0.02 worth

cheers and good luck, keep us posted

The 2.9 wasn't that bad. And 200K miles alone is no reason to assume it needs head gaskets. The 2.9 has head issues, but they don't usually show unless you get it too hot.

Angie, it also sounds like you deal with some dishonest shops.

I'd buy it and start by checking spark and fuel pressure.

Thank you, I am very mechanically inclined. I refuse to use shops, and have experience with anything that may be wrong, and also have lots of knowledgable people for additional support if need be. Basically it will be a cheap truck I don't have to worry about breaking off road. Unlike my the FJ cruiser, it will be cheap and easy to fix most problems. She wanted to get enough cash from the truck to buy a 10x8 wrote iron fence for her yard. Not sure she will be getting that kind of money from anyone willing to buy the truck. Thanks for all of the advise.

Yeah, $350 to $500 tops...if it runs...and all the other stuff...

If you are good with tools and patient for parts when needed...they are harder and harder to find if you want to keep it stock...might be a good mod truck if you have room to store it and time to work on it...

perhaps you could barter a deal.
how good are you at installing fences?

I wouldn't say I'm the most patient person when it comes to waiting for parts, but it's nothing I haven't had to do before, it's mangable. And I have no problem with a car not being stock, it's all part of the fun. Ive only done a handful of chain link fences, but i wouldn't call them anything close to being pleasing to look at. It would come down to tearing down her wooden fence and setting some sort of supporting posts or walls up to hang the gate on. Unfortunately I'm inexperienced in the way of the fence.

I don't deal with any shops (except when needing specialty stuff like exhaust) .... all my trucks have been 4.0L Angie has had just 1 - 2.9 and when she dumped it it had 190K KM's (120K miles) and the heads were shot could have been over heated from previous owner (she drove it about 20K KM's 5 speed) before she dumped it. I just tossed that out there for an example of what to be expecting from a 2.9.

cheers

I would offer to tear her fence down and haul away the waste in exchange for the truck.

Up here that truck would be worth about $200. Sitting for several years with rodents living in it totally kill any value it had before... her idea of getting any real money for it is a pipe dream.
