Escorts 2nd SAS

Another thing I did, replaced the d30 pinion seal and a new yoke since it was grooved and went through seals every couple months. The kit I got has the upgraded yoke with the ubolts instead of the straps.

This is my stopping point for tonight.

Damn!! Good luck, and I hope it gets better with the new parts

Where did you get the ubolt yoke from? Or better yet where did you get the kit from? I have the straps now and hate it...lets say I have strap stuck on at the moment and a ujoint cap in it.

Drill the old out out, buy the proper size ubolts, fixed. :dunno:

I put blue loctite on mine. :shok:

If its anything like the 44s and 35s then you should be able to drill it through and use ubolts. Thats what I did on all my D35s

The steering is done...for now. I had a few problems that I need to fix later on. I made the tierod a 1/2" to short and it should be ok with thread engagement but I'm just not comfortable with it. I couldn't use the ram I had, it was to big in diameter and will not fit where i want it. So I need to look for something smaller, maybe the one Trail-Gear has. I still need to make the pitman arm double shear. Was going to have hydro assist so I didn't make it double shear, so tonight I will have to fix that. Pics will be uploaded later today.

No pictures uploaded yet, was busy after work yesterday. Pulled the pitman arm off and made it double shear. Hopefully I did it the right way, heated it up to 300* and then stuck it in a bucket of sand to cool overnight. It wasn't cool enough so I had to drive my wife's traverse to work today, she not happy but oh well. I'll get all the pics uploaded soon.

Finally found time to upload pictures...

This is all the parts, 1ton GM TRE, tapered inserts for the TRE, 7/8" 18tpi tube adapter, 3/4" rodend and a double adjustable tube adapter, 1.5"x.25" DOM

Started with changing the pinion yoke, it had a groove that made seals leak after a few months.
This was my stopping point for day 1.

I needed to raise the track bar on the axle to make room for the hydro ram. So I had to make a new bracket.

This is mockup to see where I would mount the draglink tabs. You can see the cardboard template.

I had to modify the trackbar, it was an "S" shaped that I had to flip and take out the one bend towards the axle. I slipped a 2" piece of solid rod into the trackbar, beveled it to an inch wide, and welded it together at 160amps. Had to flip it to clear the engine cross-member. I also had to trim the cross-member some more.

IMAG1411.jpg

Everything was just fitted together for mockup and then all welded together.

IMAG1412.jpg

I had to angle the draglink out some to clear the swaybar tab and trackbar bracket. This is not the final location for it.

IMAG1413.jpg

Finished..took it out for a drive to see how it was. Had to adjust the alignment some more.
Where the stabilizer is, that is where the ram was going to go. It would not fit in this location, and there was no other place to mount it. So for now, the stabilizer is temporarily mounted in place with removable clamps.
In this picture, the pitman arm is in single shear.

Final pictures, with the double shear pitman arm.

Here you can see where I raised the mounting location for the trackbar.

The double adjuster, I left the jam nut on the TRE just for extra insurance. They say it's not needed because of the pinch bolt.

Finished it just in time for the trip to Bundy Hill tomorrow.

Looks real good!!

Do my truck next :D

Looking good.

Hopefully get at least the draglink from you soon. Two years of being able to turn to the right more then the left is getting annoying, plus having an upside down steering wheel too.
