Escorts 2nd SAS

Working on the power steering pump bracket for the saginaw conversion, I got to a stopping point. So I decided to pull the d30 axle shafts to inspect the ujoints because I thought one was bad. Well both u-joints are in excellent condition.....but I have another shot wheel bearing. This one lasted almost a year. *sigh* at $90+ a piece, its getting very expensive.

Maybe I should think of upgrading from the 30 and get serviceable bearings and a spindle with manual lock outs....Dana 44 or higher? Yeah, I think so.

Did you look on rockauto.com for the bearing? At almost a grand you can upgrade to the lockout bearing set. Good thing I keep a spare unit bearing, so far one of mine has lasted me over two years and they other one almost been on a year. Both are timken.

that.. or learn how to dismantle the bearings and just replace the bearings and races in there... Some people do it, I think one of my jeep friends has a write up on it.

personally, just find you a 44/9" combo :D

Both sets are Timken. It should of lasted longer than it did.

If I can find that are not full width, then yes I will most likely go that route. But, sitting here looking at the truck thinking for the last 30 minutes, a wheel bearing is still cheaper than all new axles.....if i had the extra cash I would go D60/10.25 and be done with it.

Just the unit bearings... But only breakage has been ranger stuff, no jeep stuff

Wonder if there is such thing as rebuildable unit bearings. And if not, it would be a great idea to have them.

i just bit the bullet and went fullwidth, ive been happy ever sense. I should still be on the original bearings but i Failed to MAINTAIN them after a good muddy run and 2 months later dicided to pull them apart and repack them... nope beyond servicing. so i was out another 43$ for new inners, outters on both sides . and i think i shelled out another 16$ for spindle bearing kits (thats with employee discount). that was last summer and the beaings are still beautiful last time I checked

maybe I will keep a look out for a set of axles, if I find some at a reasonable price I might get them and build them up when time and money are available.....

maybe

why not just convert to manual locking hubs? it looks like they have individual bearings in the kits

Because at a grand for the kit, you could go to a d44 real easily including getting it narrowed and what not.

i was thinking i saw a kit for $500 or so, that may not be a kit worth buying though
