okay so after some time on trs, heres what ive gathered:

-between the 7.5" and 8.8" rear, there are essentially 2 different pinion flange bolt patterns; "large" and "small".

-most 7.5'' rears use the small pattern and most 8.8" rears (all explorers) use the large pattern

now heres my actual question:

i picked up a 1978 302/c6 combo for my truck. the tranny has a pretty big yoke on it, so i'll assume its a "1350" size unit.

currently, i have some tiny crap for u joints, so ill assume theyre "1310" size.

i would like to get this driveshaft: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/STR-U1699/ custom built. its dirt cheap and from a great company that i know will stand behind it if anything should fail.

so, is there a 1350 size pinion flange yoke for the small bolt pattern available? if no, do they make a 1350x1330 combination joint? because worst case, im pretty sure theres a 1330 size unit available for the small pattern. and when i eventually upgrade to my explorer 8.8, i know i can get a 1350 size unit for the large pattern.

what exactly was the 302/C6 out of? How do you know it's C6 and not a C4?

alright thanks for the replies, and im positive its a c6. ive worked on a few c4's and this dwarfs them.

but after reading that article, it makes the "1310" look pretty sizeable. mine are not. perhaps my truck has a different size?

You probably have the dinky little 1210 joints.

Flanges for 1310s are available for both the large & small pinion flanges. They should be fine for anything a 302 can dish out (provided your axles are geared correctly for the tires you're running).

yeah theyre pretty puss 1210 sounds more like it.

my plan is to run the 7.5 (3.45) gears till it blows then switch to a 31 spline 8.8 with 4.11's or maybe even 4.56's
