However i do stand by the fact that ill still get the same amount of weight from A to B, just not as fast and with slightly more fuel....

And WHEN one breaks, ill be real happy i got a 460 lol.

I like the 460. As a kid, my dads dually had one, as did buddies dads F350, its what I learned to drive and wrench on. Back when we had magazines, I saw a 460 built by Fueling on the cover of Engine Masters magazine and fell in love. Torque is nice...as for mpg's, well that's what two fuel tanks is for.

I have a love/hate with the 460. Ive had reliabilty issues with the couple ive had. I wish ford woulda stuck with the 400 honestly. Hotrod or one of the mags pumped 500hp and like 550ftlbs from one on a pretty decent budget.

The 400s massive 4 inch stroke really makes torque nice. My 77 all stock saddled with a C6 and a 3.07 rear did a pretty decent job of getting my 7000lb travel trailer rolling. However hill country was rough at speed. But that 400 stayed glued togther locked in 2nd, on the verge of overheating, foot close to the floor at 50-55. Im sure a set of 4.10s it probably woulda pulled about as strong as my 460.

A 400 with 4.10’s is awesome. We had a ‘77 with that (and C6 / full time 4wd) absolute snow-pushing beast. 9mpg- no matter what. I swear empty it grabbed 2nd within 10 ft of forward travel, 3rd by 35 mph. Previous “farm truck” was a 74 with a 300 & np 435 (creeper 1st 4 speed manual) both trucks were 3/4 ton with very similar 2-tone green paint jobs. (the 74 was a 2wd with 3.73’s, great truck too, it got 14/16 mpg)

I had a 78 F350 dually with a slightly massaged 400 (RV cam, straight up timing gear, headers, 4bbl edelbrock carb/intake), T18 4sp, and a 4.30 rear. It was a dumptruck in its former life with 14 leaf packs and 2 overloads....

That truck waus an absolute monster. Nothing it wouldnt pull, never got it stuck, hauled massive loads, never a whimper.

Yeah it got 6mpg, topped out around 75, and rode like a forklift...but everytime id start in second, dump the clutch, open the secondaries and leave sideways with those ol goodyear workhorses squeeling for mercy...it brought a smile to my face.

Youll get alot of arguement on this. Everyone thinks the 390 is some mythical, otherwordly powerhouse (kinda how people see the 351C).

My opinion...yes the 390 was "stronger" then the 400 pre emission, i believe the 400 to be a better overall engine and much better suited to truck duty. Same for the 360 vs 351M.

If youre shopping for trucks just know alot of 360s "magically" turn into 390s at sale time....same for 351M's becoming 400s

never drove a 390, drove a 360 once- 76 F150 4X , C6 , 3.73 , was ok but the owner had the carb set lean to “try” for some fuel efficiency. Had 31-11.50’s on 10” wagon wheels. Anemic from a stop but from 40 mph on seemed like a V8 & at least sounded good with headers & dual pipes out the back. The only 351 Ive ever thought was hot was a ‘87 H.O. in a F250, dont know its gears but was a 4wd farm truck. Dads big bronco (the 96) had 3.55’s with 31-10.50’s It was ok but the 89 he had before it with a 302 & a manual was much more fun.
