Is it possible to remove, out the engine compartment, the engine, transmission and y-pipe as one complete unit? sure seems like it would be easier than laying on your back fighting frozen exhaust bolts, hard to reach transmission bolts and then wrestling the transmission back onto the engine.

I've wondered the same thing, but I'm betting that its a big no. That tranny w the transfer case is awfully long and that's a small hole to get it out of. On full size trucks thats the way I prefer to do it. I'm not saying that it cant be done, cause then someone would prove me wrong. It would be a PITA.

On the other hand if u remove the core support or all of the front sheetmetal, then it wouldn't be so bad.

by then you may as well just hoist the body off of the frame. figured it wasn't possible. but then again every time I "figure" I am usually wrong. Maybe if the truck is on ramps you could point the tranny down and lift it out? guess that would make it difficult to use the picker.

You can, but like Country said, you gotta pull the t-case, shifters, rad, core support, and grille. Then, if you are CAREFUL and have it hooked up well, you can slide the whole thing out the front.

I'm doing mine cab-off because I want to rhino line the frame and replace the cab mount bushings at the same time, but its doable.

uhhhh. Isn't the core support welded in there?I think I am not picturing something correctly.
T-case and shifters come off anyway when yanking the trans (I guess they don't HAVE to, but I do) I was just thinking that if you have to go through the work to remove the transmission you may as well remove the entire unit and clean it, replace seals, repaint, check oil pump pickup screen, etc. while it is out.

It's good to see another west coaster on here. You know if you drop the tranny mount and let the tranny hang down with no transfer case use a couple long extensions and a wobbly from the end.The tranny comes right out real fast with a gun a little longer without.Tried to take the 4.0 out of my 93 donor truck with the cross pipe and wound up sawsaling the bolts off half way out.I did put the engine and tranny in together no cross pipe but I have a 2" body lift.

huh. How did you support the tranny so it didn't come crashing to the ground? Did you take the Y-pipe off first? I don't need to do this anytime soon, I just always think about it cause you never know.

I can have the bell bolts out in under 5 min with a craftsman 13mm crossforce ratchet wrench.

you can gain room by putting only the rear wheels
on ramps. i have never tried transfer case too,
but engine trans and y pipe is the way to go.

I got everything out and back in ok. I just don't like laying on my back doing it. Always looking for an easier way.

I know the y pipe will come out with it..just watch the heater box. I just did it last weekend

Where's the best place to hook on a 4.0 to yank it out. I have a 12 foot A frame and a chain hoist. Do ya'll pull the upper intake off or leave it on. I've never pulled one of these.
