engine ticking cure

The ticking in mine isn't intermittent. It is there pretty much all the time. Only once in a great while will it stop, but only stays away maybe 5 or so minutes then back again for another long period of time. Was doing this when I bought it used. Has been used as a DD for two years now with it this way and still going. Only other thing besides the ticking sound that I noticed with it, which I didn't until I got my 3.0 Ranger is, my 2.9 has power more like a 4 banger than a 6cyl. When I got my 3.0 I gave my 2.9 to my father and would like it to last him a while though, so was hopin to get it back up to par without R&Ring the motor hopefully.

The people at http://www.pushrods.net can make custom push rods for just about anything.

But IMO it wouldn't be worth while and could possibly cause problems in the valve train geometry. You could adjust the rockers (and yes, '90s are adjustable), but I don't think it will help and will cause far worse problems if there over tightened.

I had the intermittent ticking after I cracked a head and my bearings were down to the copper when I pulled it apart - engine was simply worn out. JME

I would agree with this. There is something wrong in the motor causing the ticking. If there is more slop than you can get out with the adjusters changing pushrods would seem to only be a bandaid. My F-350 was in for some work and I wasn't looking for the pushrods. Just wanted to ask because it seemed unlikely to me that Ford would do that. Remember that just cause you read something on the web doesn't make it true.

my 88 2.3 is ticking 2, when it warms up it quietens down. I have used sea foam once and changed oil while hot 2 or 3 times. My ? is two part will 5w30 oil versus 10w30 or even 20w50 which will possibly quieten them down? Also my cousin said on his he put in 1 quart of oil and 4 qts of trans fluid and let idle for 2 hrs and changed it and it flushed it out, does this work and is it safe? Thanks

mine ticked when cold si i seafoamed it and hehe it went away but i never changed the oil after and the tick when cold is back. hehe but im gonna change it soon.

The tick is because your motor is old, some fluid is not going to fix it... Seafoam works great, but isn't a miracle cure, and I've never drained oil after using it... Never had problems...

ya obviously it aint that bad. btw it did cure it for a while. maybe cure isn"t the word. more like masked

Guys, the cure to all this ticking is so simple: just change the dang lifters already! They are only $3 per lifter. That's $36 for the whole engine. I know, I know, you gotta pull the heads. Big deal. The 2.9s are so simple and come apart so easily it's no big deal. I could do one in a saturday easy. By the time you buy new lifters and gaskets you're looking at about $100. That's cheap to fix a serious engine noise. Just do it already!
