ok im new here and i just bought a 3.8 supercharged series 1 engine and tranny and im wondering how to swap it into my ranger, like what ill need to make it work and some advice. i do want to keep the 4x4 functional tho. any info would help. can i keep the stock rearend?

GM transverse v6 + ranger = fail

unless youre talking about some other engine im not familiar with...

no its a 3.8 gtp engine. i saw a guy put one in his ranger. im just wondering what id need? and if my stock rear end and what not would hold up. i have a 3.0 in it now. but the supercharged 3.8 would be much more fun lol

the rear will definitely hold up. otherwise you're totally on your own with pretty much everything lol. motor mounts, exhaust, and all of the electrical stuff will have to be fabricated yourself. it's not a very popular swap (in fact, i've never even seen one done before), so there's no aftermarket parts available to help you along.

oh and as far as 4wd goes, i dont think any ford transfer cases will bolt up to any gm transmissions, so idk. and i believe gm transfercases drop to the other side so i think youre pretty screwed with that...

Later model fullsizes drop on the left side... aside from that I got nuthin' :dunno:

well that helps alot....thanks i guess....anyone else have some ideas?

Ehhhhh, I have no clue about the 3.8 even having a bolt pattern allowing it to bolt to a rwd transmission. I mean the 3.8 is a okay engine but there are many many many other options that would be much easier for you to swap and have way way way higher power output.
What type of fabrication skills do you have? Do you have the access to some sort of cnc machine to build adapters for the trans and possibly t case? Why are you so set on this engine? have you thought of selling it and spending the cash on something better?
Im not dogging on the 3800 but I just have better options and I dont think the 3.8 is that impressive in the first place.

yea i could get something else. i figured use the 3.8 cuz its supercharged and i wouldnt have to change much to get it to work. i work for a machine shop so i have a ass load of tools at my disposal. but what engines do you recomend. the 3.8 would have 240hp and almost 300 torque.

There is a member of my local forum who has dropped hybrid Series 1 into a RWD Toyota Application (84 Cressenda wagon)

thats the only resource I can offer, but I'd still STRONGLY recommend NOT doing that swap...

ok so all gm 3.8s have 1 of 2 bellhousing bolt-patterns

some 3.8's have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the longitudal 2.8l/gm 4-cylinder. if yours is that way what you'd need to do is find the trans/transfer case from a late-80s 2.8l jeep cherokee that used the gm2.8 and has the drivers side driveline drop. some of the late-80s/early-90s s-10s also had the bellhousing you would need with a drivers side drop.

some (very few) 3.8s have the 4.3l bellhousing which is the same as all gm v8s too. if that is the case what you need to do is find the trans/t-case from any 90s I.F.S. truck that has the drivers side driveline

PET PEEVE of the WEEK:

People using NON-Ford acronyms when discussing anything on the forum.

WFT is a 3.8GTP engine?

SPELL IT OUT.

AD

there is no "spelling it out that would be like telling someone to spell out FX4

"GTP" is a trim package offered on the 3.8l supercharged pontiac grand-prix, but is referred to (even by pontiac) as the "GTP". if he had saidWRX (instead of impreza-WRX) you wouldn't have told him to spell it out, nor would you have criticized him for using a letter abbreviated trim package to refer to a non-ford car. don't get butt-hurt that he referred to something that you didn't know
