Engine swap questions

After removing the old trashed 2.9/5 speed from my 1989 BII I am now getting ready to put in the running 2.9/5 speed I have. I will be combining the best parts off both to make one good BII.

I have a few questions;

1) When I look into the spline in the clutch where the input shaft of the transmission goes I can see the remains of a brass bushing. What is that called? Would the auto parts store have one?

2) Would that be the reason that BII kept eating transmissions? (input bearings)

3) Any thing else to replace other than the valve cover gaskets on the engine before installing it? The engine runs well other wise.

Thanks...

It's probably the pilot bushing or bearing. It's supposed to be pressed into the center of the flywheel. You're supposed to replace that when doing a clutch job.

I guess I could answer the other questions too.

Yes a bad pilot bearing or bushing could cause damage to the input bearing of the transmission. The point of the pilot bearing is to keep the input shaft from wobbling around. If the input shaft moves and the clutch disc gets clamped down off center of the flywheel it will stay that way as long as the clutch remains engaged. Which could be hundreds of miles if it happens when getting on the interstate for a trip. Obviously this will put a lot of stress on the main shaft bearings.

Engines... out replace every seal you can get your hands on. Do the rear main, timing cover, front main, valve covers, oil pan, distributor O ring, everything that seals oil inside the engine.

That's the one.

Along with that I'll replace all the seals. That engine has been a good running engine, I'm hoping to get a few more miles out of it in a body that isn't so chewed up by rust..

Thanks...

quick question, I'm taking out a 2.9l auto, keeping the tranny and putting in a 2.9l from a 5 speed, is there anything special i have to do? or do i just change the flywheel and?

I don't think so but my swap is from a 2.9 5 speed to a 2.9 5 speed so I am not sure.

anybody...

I am pretty sure the blocks are the same and yes change the oil pump while you have the pan gasket off I always go with a high volume unless anyone says otherwise they are more expensive but at least put a new one in. Depending on the miles on the new motor valve guide seals wouldn`t hurt either if you think it is necessary.

Progress report.

After removing the blown engine & installing the running engine, last Saturday I fired the engine up and it ran great! Now to replace the other wore parts from the donor BII and go.

I'll use the other engine with the blown heads for parts if needed..

Thanks for all the help! This is a great form!!!
