just finished swapping a 4.0 and tranny from a 98 ford explorer into a 95 ford ranger. shits going to shit fast. right now its in my driveway and wont start. has fully charged battery and even with jumpers wont start. when attemped gives the click and nothing else. it was driving for a little bit earlier but the tranny shifts hard and the overdrive light is blinking at me. high idle. dies when brakes are put on but figured out that was a vacuum leak, found and fixed the leak, still dies just not the same as when it was the vacuum leak causeing it. it was slow, sluggish, felt like a 1 liter in a full size chevy. anyone who knows anything please help me out.

You verify that everuthing worked fine before the powertrain was pulled from the explorer? What PCM did you use? Wiring harness?

i did verify the drivetrain worked. explorer engine started up great when it was in the explorer. shifted gears fine but the rig was totalled so i didnt drive it. the ranger tranny was a 5 speed 5r55e and the explorer is a 4 speed 4r70w. i used the ranger computer and wiring harness just swapped the explorer engine and put what ranger sensors i needed in so it would plug up with the ranger wiring harness. the engine works alright, still need to get a few kinks out but the main problem is the tranny overheating light (overdrive light blinks), and the tranny didnt plug into the ranger connecters so it doesnt shift right. all i was able to do was attach the shift cable so it shifts inside the cab, which it does but it doesnt shift right.

Those are different trannys and they are computer controlled, so you need the proper connections and PCM for the combo.

See if you'd be able to snag a computer from the explorer, or any explorer.

i can do that its my explorer but will i have to use the explorer wiring harness too? i mean i cant just splice the tranny connecters into the ranger ones? cuz that would be alot easier than removing the ranger wiring harness and putting the explorer one in...

The 4r70w should have only been used in 5.0 explorers, not the 4.0 v-6.

the 4r70w is currently behind a 4.0 in my ranger, it drove me home.. barely, but thats because it isnt connected to the ranger by anything other than the shift cable. the 4r70w came out of a ford explorer with a v6 4.0.
