I have a 1985 Ranger, 4cyl 2wd 5 speed. It was my first car and set for many years, I have just recently acquired it. I thought for many years it had the 2.3. I searched the VIN on NHSTA site and it says it has the 2.0. Any other way or sites to visit to verify? I want to start working on it and have some questions to ask on here but want to have the correct information before I do.

If the VIN says 2.0 it is probably a 2.0.

The 2.0 and 2.3 are externally identical, no way to tell them apart without tearing them apart.

Yep, that...

There are a few things between the two that set them apart over the years but '85 is a tough one, '85 was the first year for fuel injection in some areas but many remained carbed but only 2.3L's got fuel injection while 2.0L's remained carbureted until '88 ('89 or '90 in Canada) when they were ended.
