Pulling my 2.9 with Mitsubishi 5 speed & have questions.

Are there 8 bell housing bolts, total?

Can I just support the tranny and work the engine out or do I need to drop the driveshaft & loosen the trans mount to give me the flex and angle required?

Hoping I can just leave the tranny in place & jack it up slightly to get the engine lifted clear of the motor mount bolts. Any suggestions?

IIRC the 2.9 has 6 bell bolts and two starter bolts.

The trans can be left in, but it makes the job much easier to just remove it. Lining the engine up with the trans in place can be a bastard. The last time I tried doing it that way was on my BII, I had to completely remove the crossmember and the shifters to get the play I needed and I ended up tearing the CV boots on my drive shaft. That vehicle has headers and AC though. A factory exhaust manifold and/or no AC would probably give better results.
