ive got a 94 4.0 with 295000 km's and the oil pressure is extremely low and the heads or head gaskets are given me problems so i would like to know is it cheaper to buy a new engine or to get the one i have rebuilt. I like to keep my engine i have right now but cost is more important. thanks

you wont be able to buy a new motor for a 94, just a rebuild.

the most cost effective route by far is to buy a lower mileage engine from a junkyard.

does anyone know how much it would cost for a machine shop to rebuild an engine?

You can get a rebuilt crate engine for roughly $1500, I have heard good things about Jasper. If you get a crate engine or have someone rebuild it for you get a warrenty in writing.

most machine shops are going to charge you more for the rebuild then you'd pay from a company like jasper (its all about volume).

jasper also has an excellent waranty. 100,000 miles i believe...

It depends on what is needed. Especially whether or not the cylinders need to be bored -- they don't necessarily need it. I'd inspect the $#@^ out of it before making that decision.

I've had bad experiences with mail order components, though I've never tried Jasper. Inspecting the "rebuilt" parts yielded quite a lot of out-of-spec parts. In that particular case, at least, it wasn't just about volume, but also about sloppiness (e.g., one-angle valve jobs, no shims, leaving bellmouthed valve guides in place, and so on).

I live an hour away from the Jasper rebuilding plant so a lot of people around here go that route and I would say it isn't a bad way to go as long as you install it properly. also while the engine is out i would strongly recommend that you flush the cooling system thoroughly or else you just put cooling system crud through your brand new engine's water passages.

Shop around your area - someone may have a fairly low mileage 4.0 they are willing to sell cheap. Bought mine for $200 and all he could tell me was that he remembered the truck looked pretty good, had barrel rolled, and had less that 100K on the speedo. He let me take off the pan to check it for . . . cobwebs, dirt dauber nests. He bought the truck for $600 to get the wiring harness for a customer. Been driving it for almost 20K now.

Put an add in Want to Buy and tell folks where you are willing to drive to pick one up.

BTW - do you guys think that if you put your location in your profile Men in Black are going to come rummage around in your underwear drawer or what?
