ok i am going to rebuild my 4.0 before i put it into my ranger. my question is what is a good brand to use. i checked on one from o reillys and they wanted 1200.00 for the damn thing the name is master pro?? i also checked on one from auto zone and it was 985.00 the name for that one is hi tech. ( i used hi tech to rebuild the 2.9 i have now in my truck and i am not happy with it!!) help please!!!!!!

somebody is fucking you on that. i rebuilt mine for about 600 in parts. try a local machine shop

If you are trying to purchase a short block(no heads), or a long block(with heads), you are not re-building the engine. You are simply swaping it out. To re-build the engine, you tear it apart and put in new parts yourself. That may be the difference in price in your two quotes.

If this is what you want to do, install a re-built engine, there should be several re-builders in your area. Ask a few of the garages in your area which engine they recommend. shady

Try: www.rpmmachine.com

Just take the block and head to a machine shop and they'll let you know what size: .010, .020, .030, or .040 over stock and just order.

You can definitely probably find something cheaper but plan on spending around $700 to $800 bucks with you doing the assembly.

EDIT: I don't know if you want to go AutoZone for parts, but I just looked on their webpage and their master kits are pretty cheap.

when i rebuild an engine the only gaskets i use are felpro, just my 2 pennies.i've never had a problem with them.

yep no ones talked about felpro, clevite,et cetera.why only the chinese crap?

i will be going with high qualty parts this time like the ones you talked about. i agree with you on the chinese IT SUCKS ASS. give me usa made parts are give a me a peddle bike!!! lol i will probley be using the site you gave me for my rebuild. thanks

Does it even need rebuilding? I wouldn't do it for the fun of it. I would mike everything per the tolerances given in the factory service manual. If it passes, don't machine it. You are wasting useful life of a motor by machining when it doesn't need it. These newer motors should last a quarter of a million miles under normal use and regular oil changes. Old motors lasted 100,000 because the carbs trashed the oil.

I would pull it apart, inspect and put new gaskets in when I put it back together. You can run new standard-sized bearings if the tolerances are within spec. Make sure you take the lifters apart and clean them with gun bruashes and Hoppes. Inspect the valvetrain as well.

Will's advice is good. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I went that route with my 250 I6. The head was TRASHED, but the entire bottom end was pretty good. I honed the cylinders, replaced with standard size rings and bearings, and polished the crank. I ended up spending about $1000 for everything; more than half of that was machine work on that FN head. It needed six valve seats and twelve valve guides....

engine rebuild

it has over 250,000 on it. and when i picked it up it started to knock. when i was loading it on the trailer. i am going to collage soon as i get this done so i want a reliby vehical!! going to uti in chicago. just trying to get my shit in order first. my plan is to have 1500 when i go to start school and to have a brand new r6:drool: . that is why i got a new job last monday. :yahoo:
