I have an 89 Ranger 2WD with the 2.9 V6. I want to hopefully make it as off road oriented as possible but I only have so much money working at a grocery store. I was thinking to rebuild the engine and was wondering what would be the best ideas on how/ what to replace/ do since money is limited. I posted in general discussion because I also want ideas on other things that would be neccesary/ or inexpensive to make my truck more off roadable. If anyone could give ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldn't rebuild a Ranger engine. Costs much less to replace it with a good used one. If there is a specific issue with the motor you have, try to fix it first.

A locker in the rear axle, a 3" body lift and cut out the fenders for 33s. Now you have an offroad truck.:icon_thumby:

I agree with WILL. Ranger engines are a dime a dozen in junkyards and expensive to rebuild. Find a good junkyard engine and transplant.

I also agree with the other stuff.

Buy a second GOOD running 4x4 truck and use it. Probably cheaper in the long run. That said, I went against the same advice with my race truck, and learned a hella lot more.
Good luck,
Richard

Ok thanks alot guys, I am maybe getting a 4 inch suspension lift in which case I'd probably be getting some 30s or 31s. If I dont get the lift, I'm just gonna go with 27s or so. Should I try to find a 4.0 or just stick with the 2.9?

Go with the 4.0. With a stick. Both are pretty bulletproof.
