Engine Pull Question

Hey all,
I am gearing up to pull the 2.9 out of my '90 Bronco II. I plan to change all of the leaking gaskets and seals, swap the clutch to a 4.0 one, put on some headers, and put in a high-volume oil pump. I realize that this question is probably rather obvious, as this will be the first engine that I have ever pulled, but I am wondering where exactly the lifting sling or chain actually bolts to the engine, as I don't see any sort of lifting "ears" on the heads. Does a chain somehow bolt up to the holes in the top of the cylinder heads where the exhaust outlets are, similarly to how the accessory brackets bolt to the heads? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

that's exactly what i did yesterday. i bolted a chain to the top of the exhaust manifolds in the center holes. worked perfect! balance was great. be careful where the chain hits the intake. i made my chain kinda long so it wouldn't put much pressure in the intake.

+1 ^^

Yes, and front and back of the heads always have larger threaded bolt holes for just that purpose, oh, ..and for bolting on accessory brackets, lol

Thanks guys, I'll just do that then. Appreciate the help, and I'll get rolling disconnecting stuff! :yahoo:

Go down to the junk yard and get yourself two seat belts. Doesn't matter what they are from.

Take them home, cut them off with as much length as you can, and then tie them off to the exhaust manifolds in a criss-cross pattern so that they form an X over the top of the intake.

If you tie the knots properly and tightly, this gives you the same good balance but you don't have to worry about damage to other parts, and it's just as strong as chains. I usually just use ratchet straps myself.

Also, word of advice from someone who has done this a dozen times or so. Take the trans out. I know it seems like a lot of extra work, but every time I have tried to cut that corner I have regretted it at the end of the project.

Also, an FYI since they can be hard to see past the factory manifolds, the mounting nuts are 18mm.

I appologize for the lateness of my response. I had to wait for a day off and to be able to borrow the engine hoist from work. Anyhow, thanks for everyone's help, and I pulled the 2.9 out yesterday. Adsm08, your suggestions were right on, thanks a million, and knowing that those nuts are 18mm was a huge help. I dig the seatbelt idea, but I couldn't make the trek to the junkyard, which is about 30 miles away, so I just used ratchet straps. I tied them off to the manifolds and they balanced the engine really well, the pull went beautifully. So, as of now, I have the engine, tranny, t-case, driveshafts, and a whole slew of other stuff in my garage waiting to get baths at the car wash. I also have a whole box of new parts and am just waiting on a 4.0 clutch kit and a new set of body mounts, as well as a ton of little parts that I still need to pick up. Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.
