Engine Problems

I'm having a serious problem with my ranger. It's a 4cly 2.5 motor and its making a knocking sound when it ideals but as soon as i give it some gas it stops

Any thoughts on what it could be?

Check the oil pressure. I don't care what the dash gauge says, go do a mechanical fuel pressure test. If that is ok run some seafoam and a tank of mid-grade fuel through it.

I think you mean oil, not fuel?
And what would an OK pressure be?
