Thats a little harsh dude. The guy did a V8 swap, and he is down to the small stuff. I would say he did good. You blast a guy for not knowing the "old school" stuff on a motor that for the most part has not been on any car that they worked on. I would be pissed if the carb was not at least close out of the box. How do you know that its points? It could even be a crappy ground?

Harsh ? No. He was harsh for blaming the carb for not being "spot on" out of the box on a motor running points and timed by guesswork. How do I know it's the points ? Apparently you don't have any experience with points. Neither did he. :icon_rofl: 90% of so called "carb problems" are ignition related, not the carb's fault. This is especially true with points. If they're not set perfectly, they'll give you hell in trying to tune it. And when they wear, your tune goes out the window with it. That's why multiple carb setups got such a bad rep "back in the day" It wasn't the carbs getting "out of tune" it was the points ignition wearing doing the deed. With a Holley, you set it and forget it. They will stay "in tune" for years. If it seems to get out of tune, look at the ignition first.

It all works together did you put a ballast resister in the ignition system and dont worry about your Qs the only stupid one is the one you dont ask someone if you dont know.

Dude don't listen to morons like baddad. Most of what the people are telling you are a step in the right direction. 90% of carb related issues are not points. There are so many other areas in old systems like the balast risistor, grounds etc... To be honest 90% of electrical issues are bad or dirty grounds. I have sold countless distributors that I re-curved and converted to mag pickups to rid people of garbage points. There are issues like the vacuum having a bad diaphram.

Do listen to guys like baddad as us old school guys do know what we are talking about and have been around and seen so much. Hell I bet he has forgot more then you will ever know. His replys are a bit harsh some times but he posts great info if you will listen to him. :D

Thanks Teddyzee for saying something. This is a forum for the new and old. If everyone already knows everything why have a forum? I learn so much from just reading all the different posts, but when it gets like this (outside of fun teasing) it's a huge turn off. I agree....cool the jets and keep the good talk rolling. Good luck with the Pinging issue.

I out of the crap posting game. My whole point is in the way this poor guy was talked to. I am an old school guy but to call someone dumb as a rock is just uncalled for. I still say drop the points and you will have one less problem to worry about. I work for an elevator valve manufacturing company. We like the company the makes this carb test all our product before they go out the door. Is it 100% for every elevator, no but it is close enough to run and his carb should be as well.

I had a few beverages when saying that. Have at it boys, we learn a lot when someone fires off info we weren't expecting.

Bottom line, if I install a Holley upside down, and someone calls me an idiot, the truck still gets driven sooner.
Or if I keep talking about Tri-Y headers (easy + cheap), and someone else calls them low performance, I'm aware of that. No big deal.

There's a reason that every NASCAR team runs a Holley carb and it ain't sponsorship dollars.

There's also a reason that Electronic Ignition came along.

Just saying....

FIRST OFF PARK IT IN YOUR ASS BADDAD!!! If u would of read what i said the carb shit on me BEFORE i got to adjust the timing, Im ironing out the flaws, meaning its a project. yea i got points setup but i apperently dont got the fat wallet you carry around in your pocket, the points are gapped right n bud im 20 years old and never let anyone help me on ANY of my PROJECTS 2 solid axle swaps a few twin beam lifts and now a v8 conversion try it alone sometime. im too anal to let someone touch my stuff... I dont have a father to hold my hand threw all my 'tough times' i figure all my shit out, buy all my own tools, and live on my own, Im certain i never seen half the shit you have thats why im on here askin advise!!! anyways... iv been workin late lately i readjusted the carb no more floodin at stops not enough time in the day to mess w timing the past few days. i do believe that is the trick tho. But pulled in from work the other day and rad was drippin (odd truck aint moved in three days?) so thats another i gotta fix, built the truck on "just whats layin round" If some one could only tell this dumb rock how to change a rad now!? I hope to actually get to screw w/ the timing this week somethime thanks fellas!

ok ok sorry i am to simple to see there was a second page didnt see it till i posted i dont work on pc's well. i appreciate the help and any other input, but i dont borrow tools i like my toys and w/o the tools to work on them my toys are useless i blew my rear a wile back so not only i had to buy parts i gotta buy a tourque wrench. few trucks ago i got pulled over for height reasons got nailed to the wall in fines and still had to present my truck to a cop w/ a lower bumper/flares, had to build one, had to buy a welder. waht im sayin i know my ignition system blows but it was in the financial range i got. I have a good paying job that i do have to work over pretty often. i plan on going injected if i have the truck then but not now. I would build the truck of my dreams but wont have tools a place to live and be paycheck to paycheck, Dont make sense to me. thanks for the help ill keep the dumb questions rolling dont worry, and fill ppl in when i get to tweak the timing/rad/oil leak/carb issues/what not

First off you need to know where it is leaking. Sometimes it it hard to find the leak but if you need to change it do the research on the best one for your application. You may need to fab up some brackets and bend some metal for one with more capacity for the V-8 or 5.0 liter-302. I`m sure someone here will know the best options and what you need to do. With my dodge I would time it by feel and mpg it would take a couple of times before I would get it right. My best gas mileage happened when I would step on it at about 35 mph and it would ping twice but with yours take it slowly where it pings and back of until it don`t. Take your time you will find the right spot for both the carb and ignition.

yea finally got an early day at work gotta pick up my used but new rad was leakin on the plastic to aluminum seam which is fixable but found another cheap i already had to seal 2 sleeves of it bout a year ago so just shitcanned it. gonna throw that in if i got time for timing will tinker w/ it a bit plannin on bunch of short trips from my shop till it quits or doesn do anything diff at all then ill come back here cryin again lol. i was just worried bout needin a valve job, but thanks guys
