Hi to all,I'm in need of engine cross over info ,I have a '98 2wd ext cab with a 3.0l vin code u. I think I have found a probe engine not sure of the year yet but the owner says its a 3.0 will this work, and if not what engines will. Thanks

You have a 3.0l Vulcan engine

Here is a list of the cars and trucks, with years, they were used in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Vulcan_engine
Not on the list? then it isn't a Vulcan 3.0l, and won't work

Ford Probe only used the Vulcan engine for 3 years, 1990-1992, so engine would be pretty old

Good read here on the Vulcan 3.0l changes over the years: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/3_0-build.shtml

The car engines are mounted sideways instead of front to back.
So the coolant flow thru the heads and block is different, when engine is mounted sideways coolant goes in one end of the engine and comes out the other end.
In the Ranger coolant goes in the front and comes out the front.

So most recommend changing the head gaskets, since their openings change the flow pattern and are different gaskets for cars and trucks.
Some have not done this and say it hasn't mattered, so really up to you.

Flex fuel and gas only models don't seem to matter, the heads are different but people have swapped both ways and no one has reported problems.

You will swap all the accessories/brackets and waterpump.
Also upper and lower intake and oil pan, maybe oil pan pick up as well

FWD also uses a different oil pump... As I once bought an FWD one by accident (shame, it's a clevite made by melling). They have a longer pickup tube.

Can someone give me some more info on what I need to do to a Taurus engine to put it in my ranger, like what parts do i use off the original motor.

You will only be using the long block from the Taurus
Long block is the block and heads with crank, pistons and valve train.
Timing chain and cover
Oil pump

You will remove the upper and lower intake from Ranger engine to use on new engine
You will use Ranger exhaust on new engine.
You will remove and use Ranger oil pan and oil pump pickup on new engine
You will remove all the Ranger accessory brackets and devices to use on new engine(alternator, AC, P/S, water pump, idler, ect.....)
You may need to use Ranger Crank pulley on new engine, compare them

yes...

a vulcan 3.0L is a vulcan 3.0L, FWD or RWD, you can swap both ways.

the water pump, pulleys, intake manifold and motor mounts are different but those are not going to be reused.

most important is the coolant flow... be sure to use use the proper head gaskets... RWD applications have two gaskets which are not interchangeable, a left and right side. they are marked "front up" and "rear up".

change these out and a FWD becomes a RWD... there are no other pertinent differences.
