Okay so I'm going to reillustrate this problem. 87 Ranger 2.9 v6. Idles erratically and idles fine on and off. Misses durring idle and throughout idle speed range. While it's idling good...it will hold 3,000 rpms in nuetral for anywhere from 5 seconds,to a good couple minutes...but then it starts sputtering and and the needle will go waaaay down and it has no power. If I continue to press the gas it will just sputter and quietly backfire somewhere in the engine. It does this when it's running cold and when it's warmed up. Also while driving...same thing. It will be fine for anywhere from 5 minutes to a half hour, but eventualy it looses all power and sounds like the timing is way off. I've ran codes, replaced the fuel filter, plugs and wires, ignition module, vaccuum systems good, alternator's good, timing is perfect. I'm running out of ideas. HELP ME PLEASE!

What codes were tripped when they were retrieved?
appears you're getting a lean fuel back fire from what you described.

can it ever get past 3k rpm?

Mechanickid Did you replace any fuel related parts at all? I bet you need to replace the IAC valve.

agreed ^ certainly could be on list of culprits (The IAC)...but was there any other fuel related items replaced other than the fuel filter?? like the FPR , fuel pump/s...etc?

this can be literally any number of things yet ...or combination of things.
other things to check;
engine temp sensor (the one for the ECM, not the dash gauges)
Air temp sensor
TPS (throttle position sensor)
Fuel pressure
FPR (fuel pressure regulator)

compression

& could be the fuel filter again....meaning that you got a slug of junk in the tank and plugged it again and of course it could be the fuel pumps.

Yes it can go past 3,000 rpm easily...untill it starts acting up and then it won't. Like I said it runs like a champ but also like a piece of junk on and off. Lol. It's an intermittent problem. The Ford dealer told me over the phone that it sounded like the IAC...so I tried unplugging it and there's a difference when it's unplugged so...I've replaced the fuel pump relay and just today replaced the fuel line from the booster pump to the fuel filter. I don't thing it's any fuel filter issue because we dropped the tank and there wasn't a single flake or crumb in it...also the intank pump sock was perfectly intact. I'm also told to check the MAF sensor...I can't find it...where's that located?? Thanks for all the info.

don't think you have a MAF sensor unless you've converted it.

in all likelihood you have a MAP sensor...it sometimes id mounted up on the fire wall just towards the passenger side...and or...it can be mounted on the passenger fender ...might be tucked in be hind or near the air filter box

One of the problems I had was the IAC.....I cleaned it and it helped some but when I suspected it was messed up I tapped mine with a screwdriver handle and it would mess up and even die when I did that. Mine would be ok then when I would stop at a light it would slowly start idleing down more and more and start running rougher until it would die if I didnt give it gas.

Yeah mine does that at stop signs sometimes. I just found out that there is two fuel filters on my truck. There's one I didn't know about between the tank and the high pressure pump. I opened that up and there was no filter cartridge in it! Instead there was a bunch of crumbs and a strip of clothe. Like maybe the weirdo who had it before me decided to take it out and use that clothe instead. Anyways I put in a cartidge and cleaned out the reservoir. It helped a little but I was driving today and I still get that loss of power about every 5-30 minutes of driving and it lasts for about a minute or soo and then goes back to normal. When it's lost power and has no pick-up..I can give it gas and it sputters for maybe ten seconds and then spikes and just hauls. Very odd. It sounds just like it's got maybe dirt or pieces of that clothe clogged up in there somewhere and when it spikes...it's blowing the clog through. Idk. Does that sound reasonable?
