I'm not sure what the problem is, but when i start the engine, there's a loud knocking noise that lasts just about a second or two. It almost sounds like a rod is knocking, but it only lasts a short time. I use 5W 30 which is recommended for the motor. If anyone could help me out, i would really appreciate it!

Could be lots of things.. If it only lasts for a couple of seconds I'd forgetaboutit.. If it is a rod it will get worse and when it does you'll KNOW it was a rod.

Are you using a Fram oil filter? They are known for a poor quality anti-drain back valve, which results in a "dry start".

I've tried to ignore it, but i want to get it fixed before it causes further damage.

I'll have to see what kind of oil filter i'm using. which is best?

Oil filters are a crapshoot anymore.. We don't KNOW FOR SURE what is in any of them.. The reason is companys buy and sell to each other and other companies buy from the lowest bidder..
One way to be sure is to buy a filter with FoMoCo written on it.. Outside of that what was good yesterday might the the worst today.

+1 on the fram filter. my truck would have a dry start when i was using the fram filter... i've got a napa gold in my truck right now. i got a hella good deal on em, paid like 1.50 a peice for em at the time. now i've only got the lifter tick sometimes, but i'm also running 10-40... didn't like how the 5-30 was in my truck

+1 on the fram with me as well. my mr2 knocked like a son of a gun on startup and would take almost 30 sec to build oil pressure. after it was warm it got worse. now i run toyota or mobil 1 filters but im afraid the damage has been done.

You guys are making my point on the filters.. Back in the 70's Consumer Guide tested oil filters and came away with FRAM being the best filter they tested! Since that time they have went waaay downhill.

So what filters are the best bang for your buck? I currently have a Bosch, which i got on sale and I have never used these before, but not sure if they good or not?

ive heard good things about Bosch(some parts), but i personally, from now on, will only go with napa gold, motorcraft, or fleetguard filters. my dad has been running the fleetguard filters on our 96 Kenworth for YEARS... it seems to do a pretty good job, ran one in my truck before the napa golds, did a good job then too
