Engine KNOCK!

So, I broke down about 30 minutes from my house, battery died, jumped it, it turned slow and heavy, but fired up. Then I heard the dreaded knock... I had no choice but to drive it all the way home. Right before I got home, my oil pressure light was flashing on and off. The next time I cranked it, the knocking was BAD. The next day, I drained some oil and put Lucas in it which alleviated the knocking. The knock wasn't as loud, and wasn't as frequent (as opposed to constant) and the oil pressure light eventually went off. Then I drove it to my friend (knows a lot about mechanics) and he said that he was 99% sure that it was a rod knocking.

The knock also gets worse as you accelerate, but going at a low speed and no foot on the accelerator will sometimes disappear temporarily. And at idle will knock in triplets kind of.

I'm surprised that it has gotten this far (almost 50+ miles worth) if it is indeed a rod.

I reaaaally need a vehicle right now, so I'm holding onto a shred of hope that I can still drive my truck at minimal cost. Fingers crossed, guys. :shok:

I've personally driven (when I was younger) a vehicle with a knock for a few hundred miles before it locked up...

It's possible, but it is a time bomb, and would be better to repair/replace before it dies as repair cost would be cheaper. The longer it runs, the more debris you're sending through the oiling system, taking out other parts along the way.

Best of luck! :)

What engine? The 2.3 can knock off and on if he oil pressure gets too low...once the pressure is back up, if possible, the knock goes away...I've had my 2.3 knocking so bad I thought there were parts about to fly...but it held together...and that happened maybe 5 times...the direct result of blow-by forcing all the oil out of the crankcase.

So...if it's a 2.3 it might be OK as long as you top up the oil...and if you have blow-by...consider replacing or rebuilding the engine as soon as you can...better to swap in an old used engine than to deal with the blow-by...
