Engine keeps eating crankshaft oil seals

I am resurrecting an old thread, but thought rather than creating a new one since this is the problem I have, leaking front crankshaft seal.

So the crankshaft pulley needs to come off, then all I need is to remove the old seal which is just a rubber type seal correct? Then install the new seal evenly in about 1/4" from the front of the opening? This will be my first time doing this so I just want to be sure I'm reading correctly.

Holy Ancient Thread Batman!

Yeah, you take off the pulley off the crank, then you remove the seal, it's a pressed stamped steel seal with rubber on the inside. measure how far in it is in the case BEFORE you..., pry it out, lube the shaft install new seal using a deep socket and tap it in flush to proper depth. Make sure the seal is not crooked in the bore.

I no longer have this engine.... and the seals are cheap so if you F*up try again, eh. I THOUGHT I posted pictures here, WHAT HAPPENED?

Well I figured since there are so many people who complain about people starting new threads about the same stuff I searched and this thread came up with my problem LOL.

However, I found the seals online but they are showing different ones like just a rubber seal with no stamped steel around it. Not sure what to buy is the main thing.

How hard is it to remove the pulley, and when I got to do so do I need to mark where it is on the shaft to get it back into alignment or does it just slip on as far as it will go then just the bolt in the center? Sorry if these questions seem stupid I just don't want to screw this thing up any worse than it already is LOL.

Are you sure its at the seal to crank where its leakign and not seal to cover leak, and being in the bussiness I know you lubed the seal surface and crank, and used a sealant when you pressed the seal in

It's not hard at all. Just lock a 12" extension in the pulley and us a breaker bar with a 19mm socket. You won't need a puller, and the pulley can only go on one way.

I just changed mine and it's leaking already, so I think I messed up somewhere. :annoyed:

Thanks, hard to see down there couldn't tell for sure if the pulley would have to be aligned or not, this is going to be pretty simple, well of course if things come apart like they should LOL.

Yeah, it comes off pretty easy. BTW, the fan nut threads backwards. Do be careful when removing it as I put a 3" gash in my elbow requiring several stitches when it broke loose (I elbowed a pinch weld).

Also, I just learned that if you only get one seal and it comes with the repair sleeve...use the sleeve! I didn't and that's why it's leaking. :annoyed:

Yeah I have to wait till payday to do the radiator so I won't have to remove the fan till next weekend. Just going to replace that crankshaft seal so it stops losing so much oil. I had the fan off a few weeks ago to replace the fan itself due to a broken fin. So that shouldn't be too bad to get back off there. My issue will be getting the old seal out as I don't have a puller and have never removed a seal before. Learn as I go, hopefully it works because the parts store only had 1 seal in stock.

Looks like I will have a shop do this job since I can't even get the damn bolt lose and can't get anything in there to stop the pulley from turning. Where would I put an extension that it would be able to lock the pulley, all I'm doing here is spinning the engine over LOL, that bolt is on so tight I may never get it to come lose without having a shop do this that has all the nice expensive tools for these things LOL. So much for easy.

I don't have any power tools. Shoot, my "breaker bar" is a piece of exhaust. :icon_thumby:

Locking the crank pulley is easy as it has holes in it. I had the extension jam up underneath the block (but not on the oil pan!) Fan pulley was a a bit harder but I got it by sticking the extension at about 2 o'clock deep inside the pulley.

Crank bolt comes off normal, fan bolt is reverse threaded. ;)

Hmm, guess I am just overthinking this. Will try later on today after it warms up a bit. Then to find me a large breaker bar or something to wedge in that pulley. Thanks.

Fan came right off last night, although it wasn't much help taking the fan off but will have to have it off to do the radiator replacement anyhow.

Where did you find a fan? mine is about to grenade and I can't find a replacement.
thx

Found it on a water pump that a member gave to me a few months ago along with a few other parts. If I find another one Sunday at the JY I'll snag it for you. They're getting hard to find. Course so are these older trucks.

If I can't get this starter issue figured out though I may have the fan that's currently on the B2 that won't be getting used.

This is a stumper - you've been getting bad seals or they are being installed wrong.
I use the factory tools now, but have installed them without them when the engine was out of the truck. To remove, you might try using sheet metal screws; screw in a bit and use pliers to grip the head of the screw to pull out the seal - it may take a while, but should work. Make sure the seal goes in square and be sure to coat the lip with a little oil. Are you installing it in the right direction? The metal part is u-shaped; the flat part is out.
Just look at the crank pulley when it is running and see if you can see something wrong. It would have to be pretty bad to ruin a seal as fast as 50 miles.

I haven't installed a crank shaft seal yet, but the rear main seal was installed and wasn't in all the way, but it is good now, the crank shaft seal I'm going to not bother since I can't keep the starter properly aligned for more than a couple days at a time, no point in throwing money at something that can't be relied upon.

The seal I got from Autozone only has a metal spring on the inside of it (side that goes towards the back of the engine) there isn't any other metal on it, just a rubber seal otherwise. Kind of stumped here because everyone is saying the seal is metallic and rubber. :bawling:

EDIT: Add picture of Seal from Autozone.
