can anyone recommend a good engine gasket kit for a 1991 4.0? i checked Rock Auto and they have some pretty decent prices. ive only used felpro and Motorcraft in the past. wasnt sure how the Victor Reinze gaskets are or any of the others they offer.

I prefer felpro. On my 99 they didn't offer a full set had yo get head set and conversion set to make a full set.

When I did my head gaskets kast summer I got the stuff at autozone, had to buy 2 I think for head gaskets and then the other for intake. Later needed to get one for the water pump and manifold. Prices were reasonable.

i didnt find a full felpro set either, maybe ill just get them all seperate as well. I like the kit since everything is all there in one piece. however i probably wont use the head gaskets at this time anyways. Guess it wouldnt hurt to swap the head gaskets as well since i have the engine out and pretty much already have the top end off anyways.

i have used victor and felpro in the past and never had trouble with either.

Not use head gaskets? What are you planning to do? How deep into the engine are you going?

If its head gaskets aren't bad/leaking I wouldn't touch them.

im doing a 4.0 conversion. i have a 1990 2.9 truck and im swapping in a 1998 4.0 block. i have to change out both the oil pan (due to ifs on the 98) and also the intake (98 has a plastic with no fuel return line) so since i already have the engine out of the truck and the intake manifold and oil pan off i figured now would be a good time to replace all the gaskets. The 4.0 doesnt show any signs of leaks anywhere and didnt really want to remove the cylinder heads but it didnt seem that hard to do. Guess i can buy the kit and not install those head gaskets but if its not to hard with the engine already in pieces i might give it a shot

Head gaskets arenft bad to do while its in the vehicle. If you have it out already and apart I would check the heads. Chances are they are cracked. My 99 4.0 had 94k on it when I bought it and I did them heads were cracked good enough I could see it. I ran it like that for 12k miles then bought new ones . Victor rinze gaskets are decent I usually use felpro. Since your not taking your fuel rail apart order up a kit for a 95 4.0 lower I take head and valve cover are the same part numbers. Will be much cheaper. If your putting a alum intake on your going to have to change the intake studs with the shorter ones an possibly might need different fuel rail. I say this because 98 was when they went to a return less fuel system. Also your 98 oil pan will fit. No differences in pans except for when you get into the sohc motors

thanks for the info. im actually swapping in an intake and fuel rail from a 1990 4.0 since the 98 has plastic and the fuel rail only uses one line. i already snatched the smaller studs on the intake as well. took me awhile to figure out the others were longer but now all im lacking are the gaskets.

Ill def make sure to check the heads while im in there.

As far as the oil pan goes, i read somewhere on another post awhile back that it was different due to the Independent front suspension on the 98. I would prefer to keep the pan thats already on the block if possible. do you know anywhere i can verify this before i drop the block in?

thx again for the info

just checked with ford on the oil pan, you are correct same part # for both oil pans. Only Difference is the older oil pan has an oil sensor. Do you by anychance know if i can just bypass the sensor by using the 98 pan?

I can't say about the oil pan differences, never been around both. The sender not being plugged in might throw a code or turn on a dash light (most likely the latter) in the truck it came from, but it shouldn't affect the running of the engine if it isn't there.

Oil level sensor just turns on a light, pretty sure its a different light than oil pressure so you could just pull the bulb, you can still see the area where the sensor goes on the 98 pan on the driver side of it. Make sure you swap to a set of early injectors as the flow rate is different in the returnless system injectors

Its definitely a different sensor than the oil pressure sensor.

thanks for the replies, ill definately swap out the injectors
