not sure of a source but I've always removed them when they fall apart and found no noticeable difference in vibration

Yeah, same, I remove them. Not all 4.0s had them in the first place and thus I don't feel they are a necessary item.

Sarah'n'Tuned youtube series on her gram's 94 Ranger restoration shows that part. I don't recall exactly which video, but she mentions it and you might be able to freeze frame a part number.
