Good Morning Everyone,
Its been so lone since I have posted here I actually forgot my username so I had to get another one. I need some advice or pointers. I went back to college and I have to write a Comparision and Contrast paper. I want to compare engines. I would like to use the 1991 2.9 L V6 engine in a ford ranger and compare it to the Chevy version of appx. the same year. I have tried googling and I am not finding what I want. Would any of you happen to know of any sites where I can go to find some information. Thanks in adavance . Please email responses to JCMaidens@alltel.net or KD8AIU@yahoo.com.
Thanks Again,
Julie

Have you looked through our tech section yet? It won't have anything on Chevy engines, but there should be some good info on the 2.9. I'm sure there are a few S-10 sites that have some reasonably good tech info.

Try and look for a member by the name of Chic N Stew here, he's got an s-10 from what I gather. I think the early s-10's had the 4.3L v6 found in the 1500's. There was a smaller v6 from what I gather but the 4.3 was a dog of an engine, no power unless pedel is on the floor and your gas gauge moves really quick.

the smaller v6 in the s-10's would be the 2.8 with the tbi FI, retarded motor.....there is no comaprison between the cologne 2.9 and chevy 2.8....none whatsoever

It was a pooch in a half ton (would the 4.0 be any different?) but it would make the 4.0 look silly in a compact pickup. It was a 350 without two cylinders.

idk, i raced my buddies s-10 with a 4.3 and i was in my old ranger that had a 2.9 and i destroyed the s-10. 2.9 felt like it had more power than it should but it was bone stock.

Every 4.3 i've driven would kill any ford V6. Put a 4.0 in an F150 and it will be a dog too. They're not in S10 til 89 or 90. The early motor was the 2.8 which could be carbed or TBI. They also are found in later Camaro/Firebirds as 3.1 and 3.4 versions. They are in numerous GM model front wheel drives in all the displacements. Both are dogs although the design is very similar to a Ford V6. The 60 degree block, split pin crank, rear cam driven distributor are the same basic configuration as ford. The head and rockers are different being more typically sbc with ball/socket rockers. They're known for weak power and cranks on all early models til a redsign gave them larger bearings and more HP. I've looked for S10 sites but not found any to be as complete as TRS.

hate to say it, but the S-10 4.3 usually is a decent runner.....

Heres an intresting bit of 2.9 info...

It could be considered a high performance engine, it makes more power per cubic inch then a 351 lighting or H.O 5.0L.

later,
Dustin

idk about that man the 4.0 and 4.3 are a closer comaprison, and the 2.8 and 2.8 or 2.9 with chevy vs ford would eb a good comparison as well, but that only touches the tip of the iceberg as far as v6 fords.....also in the same years u had the 3.8, supercharged 3.8, the 4.9, and the 3.0, many different 6 cyl options then chevy of those years, and most of which will eat a 4.3 of the same year alive..... just my .02

and lets not forget the notorious newer 4.3 spdier injector issue that causes those engines to be among th emost hated engines ever created...the 4.0 ford equivalant of the same year has no such problem....

I'll be straight up with my comparisons....

2.9 BII vs 2.8 S-10.....heh

4.0SOHC vs 4.3.....probably a dead heat

3.8SC vs GN 3.8......GN's gonna eat the tbird

mass airflow GT vs 305Z28......hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

5.0GT vs late 350 Fbody.....hmmmm

5.8 lightning vs 350 sport.....hahahahahahahahaha

5.8 lightning vs 454SS......close one if the SS driver doesnt kill the tires

4.6GT vs LS1......ford insists on putting small V8s into their flagship......gives me a headache. Let us decide on a supercharger, make em all 5.4's dammit!!

supercharged 4.6 mustang special model vs Z06......the Z06 is a decently engineered car.....hmmm

Fire away...those are my honest impressions.

I still wish Ford would make a mini lightning, a special edition ranger.....

Take the 4.2 out of the F-150, make it a 4.5, mate it to an upgraded M5OD, and drop it in a slightly lowered two wheel drive ranger with 4.10 gears. IIRC, the 4.2 has a lot of room for easy upgrades.

Could be a lot of fun!!

Here's the engine specs for GM.
82-85 1.9l i4 84hp 101ft-lb
82-85 2.8l v6 115hp 148ft-lb
83-85 2.2l diesel i4 58hp 93ft-lb
83-84 2.0l i4 83hp 108ft-lb
85-89 2.5l i4 92hp 132ft-lb
86-93 2.8l v6 125hp 150ft-lb
88-95 4.3l v6 150/165hp 230/235ft-lb (2 different numbers given)
90-93 2.3l i4 105hp 135ft-lb
92-93 4.3l v6 170/178hp ?ft-lb
94-99 2.2l i4 118hp 140ft-lb
93-95 4.3l v6 191/200hp 260ft-lb
96-02 4.3l v6 180/190hp 245/250ft-lb

Just to throw it in for good measure. The 4.2v6 in the f150's 97-03 202hp and 252ft-lb. So, from what I see from the engine guide on this site the 4.0v6 puts out 207hp and 238ftlb. Both of those numbers are from the 03 year model.

I do agree with that and also the fact that Ford insist on smaller engines is pretty lame too. I think that the gt should have a bigger engine and if Ford likes the 4.6 so much they could easily make a lx version like on the Fox Bodies.
