engine cleaning

What is the best way to clean the engine and engine bay? I was thinking a steam cleaner but I cant find a place that will let me rent one. Then I was thinking a pressure washer but would that be to much water?

I know people use both, a good degreaser helps.....

well I have mud caked on almost every where and I want to get it out with out ruining any of my electrical stuff
