Well for those who know/knew, I just swapped out my transmission in my Ranger for a 2000 Ranger transmission. I had a problem however because the donor DID NOT have a spot on the tailshaft housing for my "vehicle speed sensor" (VSS).

I read my manual and thought I could actually get away with not installing it but after only 30 to 40 minutes of driving a CEL came on and sure enough it was that stupid VSS.

I ended up swapping out the tailshaft housings tonight in my garage to just be done with it, I even dropped the extra $14.00 for a brand new tailshaft seal and here are the pics. This is just a reminder to anyone who's doing this swap to pay attention (not like me) so you don't have to do extra work.

I needed to remove that white plastic ring gear piece that's on the shaft so the VSS will mesh with it and send the proper signal to the PCM.

I intended to warn you about the ball but, I forgot. I've lost that little sucker before.
You should have focused a little better on the gear for the pic, it is really hard to see what you are talking about.

I took some better pics but, it is late and I'm tired. I'll try to post them tommorow.

I'm sorry about the pic. I really just took them to show what all was involved.

Again Mutant, I want to publicly thank you for your help and experience with this job. It's people like you that make this site what it is. I doubt it, but if I can return the favor it will be my pleasure.

The black thing at the top is a rubber bumpstop to keep the driveshaft from being pushed in to far. Then is a snap ring, I popped the snap ring off with a screwdriver just to see if it were possible. I did not damage anything. The gear then slides right off.

That is the locating ball. It can fall out while you are laying under the truck so, be careful when you slide the gear off.
