My question is more discussion and point of view regarding a decision to repair or just sell my Ranger and move on. I own a 2007 FX4 Level II Ford Ranger. I purchased it in 2007 and at the time it had 24 miles on the odometer. It now has 225602 miles. I've had Ford do all the work and replaced with only ford parts. That has paid off well since the vehicle has never left me stranded. Unfortunately My transmission has now got to be replaced since reverse is not an option of the vehicle. Yes I could replace with a used rebuilt transmission but I am not going to change a lifetime of vehicle upkeep now.
So now I have to decide if its time to sell the truck to some youngster around here or repair it as it is and just bring it out on "autumn" Sunday afternoons. Not liking that last thought as much, I was wondering about putting it in to a refurb shop to just tear it down and update the Ranger. Any thoughts,

Why not see if a shop will rebuild the transmission you have? It never hurts to ask.

As far as getting rid of the truck, how much is it worth to you? Not just cost wise, but memories and familiarity.

Plus, depending on what the transmission repair bill would be, it's going to be cheaper than a vehicle payment. Unless you get a heck of a deal on a cash only vehicle purchase.

I recommend getting the transmission repaired or replaced and go on driving it. A good rebuild shouldn’t be any less reliable. You know the trucks history. Its your baby. Give it some love and keep driving as if nothing ever happened.

I'm gonna agree with the above.

Has it always been a Florida vehicle? How is it on rust issues?

Also... the truck will be worth considerably more money operating then trying to sell it with a bad transmission.

All good points thank you

considering a new vehicle is in mid tens thousands and a used, maintained vehicle is about ten thousand, makes sense to swap in a 2k transmission. especially since all the rest of the vehicle is maintained. i need to find someone like you to sell me a replacement for my ill-maintained 350kmi ranger, lol

Replacing the transmission is going to cost 2 or 3 new truck payments, and then it's driving again with no monthly truck payments. I imagine it's been paid off since 2013/2014, and you've enjoyed not having a payment. You definitely got your money's worth out of it. Only you know if you want to be strapped with a new truck payment. As far as used vehicles go, you never know what you're going to get. At least you know the history of your truck. If I was going to get something slightly used to save money, I'd get a certified pre-owned to get the longer warranty.

I'm not sure what you're ideal of refurb is, but if you fixed the transmission, had a reputable mechanic go over and inspect everything and replace anything that might be on its way out (timing chain), and paid a detail shop to thoroughly clean and detail it, it would still be way cheaper than buying another one.

I like the older Rangers. Probably built better and will outlast my 2021.
