Alright the time has come to get my 89 tested. Here in ct if you have studded snows on they give you a two speed idle test (idle and like 2500rpm free-revving), but with normal tires they run it on the rollers at two speeds (15 and 25mph?). which do you think would be easiest to pass? I have studded snows ready to put on so i could go either way...

The truck has 269k miles, seems to run well doesn’t smoke or anything. Got 20mpg last tank. starts right up every time, never stalls or misses...

You're probably fine, and I don't think it will matter much. The hardest part of an emissions test to pass with computerized fuel injection is idle and the first shot of acceleration. (You are running fuel injection, are you not?) If your economy is normal and your plugs look good, you'll probably be ok. The emissions test should factor in for the age of the vehicle and allow you to emit a bit more than the last time your machine went through.

thanks for the tip. i think i'll go for the normal test, since you say idle can be difficult to pass sometimes. they dont test idle during the normal test.

I know in NJ studded tires are only allowed between I believe nov.15th- april. And we do the 2500 rpm test only if the tires are on the drive wheels.. that test only checks hc and co. but the dyno test checks all 3 gases nox, hcs, and co. sometimes it is better to get the HC and Co to pass then nox.. But its your decision. Good luck

left my normal tires on... the thing passed with flying colors! roughly 50% of the limit on HC and CO, 10% of the limit on Nox!
